📊🇨🇳NEW REPORT

In 2022, #coal use for power & #steel production in #China has dropped. The target to peak #CO2emissions means it must fall more, yet investments in coal power & coal-based steel plants have increased.

Our new report w/@GlobalEnergyMon looks at what's happening. Image
In the first half of 2022, China’s local governments approved 28 new coal-power units, with 15 gigawatts of capacity, while Chinese steel firms announced 16 new coal-based steelmaking projects in the same period, the most since 2019, with a capacity of 30 million tonnes/year.
Steel emissions are due to peak by 2025. Emissions are falling now & there is little scope for them to increase before the peaking deadline. The steel emission peak target also means China can't use the infrastructure & construction push it used for previous economic slowdowns.

"This new wave of entrepreneurs has a different set of expectations. The new social contract is a commitment to make on their own. It’s a promise to themselves. The global carbon market is booming, it’s expected to reach $22 trillion by 2050.

So where did it all start?

A thread 🧵 of how a Mormon missionary and a future Reiki Master started it all in the 80’s

In 1987, Applied Energy Services (@TheAESCorp) planned on building a ~180 MW coal-fired power plant in Connecticut.

The #coal plant would produce ~14 million tons of CO2 emissions over its lifetime.

Global warming was already making some waves & AES was concerned

AES' CEO was former missionary & @HarvardAlumni - Roger Sant @santroger

Rogers’ "least-cost energy" strategy was revolutionary at the time.

@TheAESCorp's focus was minimizing the cost AND #environmental impact of #energy services.

So they needed a “green” solution

India will exceed #GlobalWarming target if it does not limit #carbonemissions, according to G20's climate change report

#ClimateCrisis

businessinsider.in/science/enviro…
The report said, India is not on track for a 1.5 degrees Celsius world. To be on track, India needs to limit its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to 4.597 MtCO2e by 2030 and below 3.389 MtCO2e by 2050.

#GlobalWarming #carbonemissions #climatechange
India can do so by adopting a 'no new coal' policy as well as working on a plan to phase out coal by 2040.
India's average death rate per 1,000 due to air pollution is more than 1.7 to 18 times the G20 average.

Our review paper on recent advances in solid oxide cells for #electrolysis has been published today in @ScienceMagazine ( science.sciencemag.org/content/370/65… ) Here are the main points from the paper (a thread, 1/15) 👇
Electrolysis (using electricity to drive chemical reactions) is a key technology for tackling #CO2emissions in the areas of our economy that are difficult to #decarbonize: heavy transport (planes, ships, trucks) and the production of chemicals, steel, cement, and glass. (2/15)
For heavy transport, e.g. large planes or container ships, direct electrification (batteries) is not an option due to low energy density of batteries compared to liquid fuels. Climate-friendly fuels can be made by combining electrolysis with chemical synthesis (e.g. FT). (3/15)

A new thread as #COP25 begins.
I am totally fed up with the messages about 1.5C or 2 C warming
And fed up with the "Lalaland" way of thinking that "we are about to cut emissions"
So i decided to sum up the data i have..to call this BULLSHIT
It's time for all to WAKE UP
