At the end of 2021 I ended my 36 years in local government & came out of political retirement. Here’s my #Colchester 2022 review which turned out to be one helluva year. Solidarity & #HappyNewYear to all the wonderful new people I’ve got to know in the last twelve months. 1/14
JANUARY: A group of socialists visited Fratting Hall Farm, a former pacifist settlement nr. Colchester, founded during the Second World War in 1943. The painting of the barn which survives to this day was by local artist Roderick Barrett. History 👉 historyworkshop.org.uk/radical-object… 2/14
FEBRUARY: Attended a #JohnsonOut rally organised by Brighton Trades Council. The message on the placard was one the stark messages of the protestors. 📷 BH Griffiths.

Hello. I'd like to introduce myself. I've been a long standing Lib Dem member, and I'm delighted to have been chosen as the candidate for the Stanway ward (Colchester) in May 2022. It's a tight town politically, and the Tories took over last May by just one seat. We intend to be
back running the Council progressively. Stanway is a hotbed locally, I'm against the leader of the Council in May, and our County Cllr is the Tory leader of Essex CC. I'm going to relish the challenge to do better for residents, and play my part in restoring a coalition council.

Some alternative posters for Cry Danger (1951), along with what they used to call a lobby card - there are a few others on the film’s IMDb page too. #Noirvember #CryDanger ImageImageImageImage
Contrast the American posters with these two much racier French and Italian posters, both of which foreground Fleming. #Noirvember ImageImage
This was great fun. Powell plays Rocky (it doesn’t suit him), an ex-con who gets out of jail after serving 5 years for a robbery he didn’t commit and goes after the gangster who framed him. Fleming plays the wife of Powell’s supposed partner in the robbery, who’s still in jail. Image

#NVHOW20 Introducing Mike Sewell @Mike_Sewell @Uni_of_Essex ‘Using the British Civil War in Colchester in the early nineteenth century’ - how the Civil War was used by Whigs and Tories to express loyalty in the late 18th and early 19th centuries #Colchester #CivilWar
1 #NVHOW20 The study of the impact of the British Civil War has often ended in the early eighteenth century as the last combatants died, but the conflict had a lengthier impact on local communities such as Colchester in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
2 #NVHOW20 Colchester was heavily impacted by the 1648 siege, so much so that people would argue in the centuries afterwards that it led to the town’s economic decline in the eighteenth century. The ruins from the Siege are still in the town as a constant reminder of the damage

We love getting questions about mining, minerals and geology! We were asked about the historical #Londonderry #iron mines. Here's the story...

The East Gore Slate Quarry in #EastHants likely started operating in the mid-1800s and operated into the early 1900s.
Here's the story of the quarry and how it's connected to Courthouse Hill and the Rawdon #gold mines!
#nspoli #novascotia @EastHantsNS #hants ImageImage
The historical quarry is on turn-of-the-century geological maps but there are no official records of its production, so precise dates aren’t available.
A mill was built nearby to turns its slate into roof shingles.
#nspoli #novascotia #easthants #hants Image
Today there is a modern slate quarry directly across Slate Quarry Road from the historical quarry.
One of the many old buildings that used East Gore slate for its roof was the courthouse on what we now call Courthouse Hill, but which was once known as Judgement Hill.
