This cartoon from @thetoonguy today in @TheHinduMag today, which captures the reality of knowledge supremacy, triggered an old memory that had been buried deep inside for 13 years.
The Children's #Science Congress was taking place in Baramati, Maharashtra in 2008. I had travelled with an incredible bunch of geohydrologists from ACWADAM, Pune, to see how #science was being encouraged for school goers.
I landed up in a room where children from across the country were making presentations on #biological #sciences. One presenter was from #Nagaland & she made a fantastic presentation on local #rice varieties in her village.

1/ Joining some wonderful people from what I am seeing as a diverse group of researchers at the #EditorialBoard of @PLOSGPH; journal has given itself the tall order of “addresses inequities in public health and makes impactful research accessible to all… (1/n) #Threads
2/ In words of @paimadhu "the journal will amplify the voices of underrepresented and historically excluded communities and prioritize equity, diversity, and inclusion at all levels"; I am highly skeptical of this,
3/ yet I am thrilled that a #PublicHealth journal would give itself such a vision; #Knowledge #Science #Evidence all reproduce the same kind of social hierarchies that drive unfair accumulation of resources in our society

On Aug 14, 2020 someone on an ATV noticed oil gurgling out of the ground where 63,000 gallons of oil were visibly bubbling up from more than 4ft underground which contaminated local wells.
He called the fire department who contacted #ColonialPipeline officials.
But #Colonial lied to two state lawmakers claiming they noticed a pressure drop in an Atlanta facility. But when the ATV rider came forward, they changed the story.
The biggest oil spill since 1997, over 1.2 million gallons leaked into the earth from this 40 year old pipeline.

Short THREAD on rising #racism & far-right extremism, based on very concerning updates from @IRR_News.

Please follow & support The Institute of Race Relations & the @RunnymedeTrust - organisations struggling for racial justice in very worrying times.

irr.org.uk/article/calend…
Not just in the UK, but in Spain, Portugal & France, governments & quangos are warning universities & institutions that re-evaluations of colonial history will bring dire consequences – at the exact same time presenting themselves as 'champions of free speech' & academic freedom.
The DoE's proposal for ‘free speech champions’ suggests ‘unacceptable silencing & censorship’ is now widespread on campuses.

It builds on the Govt’s attacks on critical race theory, the ‘dreadful’ (Priti Patel) #BLM protests, as well as the nebulous concept of a ‘woke agenda’.

A thread about #rhinos in #Namibia 🦏 🇳🇦🌍

1/ In the course of reading #colonial accounts of west Namibian landscapes for @Future_Pasts, I started mapping recorded encounters with rhinos: around 100 records so far, dating back to the late 1700s. 🦏
@SianSullivanUK 2/ The online map from this work indicates where #rhino were documented in the last 200 yrs.
Each placemark includes information for encounters as increasing numbers of mostly European men traversed the area. 🦏

See: google.com/maps/d/u/3/edi…
@SianSullivanUK 3/ #rhino in #Namibia were decimated by colonial #hunting with firearms in esp. 1800s: for 'sport', meat and hides.

British Capn JE Alexander's text shows an 1837 rhino hunt where no rhino are now (afaik). Firearms, spears & arrows were all used for this hunt. 🦏

Today at the #IBLS , we "visit" the @africamuseumbe to discuss the practices of exhibiting #Europe 's #colonial #past. Now, @brunoverbergt introduces the history of the museum.
And @brunoverbergt explains the change of concept the @africalmuseumbe implemented in the last 6 years.
Discussion point: can a new architecture help to enforce a change of concept (decolonization) within the @africamuseumbe ? We take a look at a new pavillion with a framed "vista" to focus on the meaning on the old museum buildings...

Spoke to @Guardian podcast about growing up in post-War #France... that is post-#Algerian War of Independence, still v. much in living memory. The War’s legacy is perceived in all kinds of aspects of modern life, still blighted by the #colonial experience.
A point that is easily overlooked by foreign observers is that the 2nd most influential party in #France now was founded by far-right nationalists who wanted to keep #Algeria French. #LePen's FN -now called the Rassemblement National -is openly racist, islamophobic & antiSemitic.
In his '#Separatism' speech @EmmanuelMacron was sugar-coating #reactionary policies based on the premise that 5-6M French #Muslims can’t be trusted to manage their own affairs & required surveillance at all times. The emphasis was that Islam is a chronic #problem around the world

1) A large number of Anglo-European politicians & media outlets have condemned/reported the death of #NavidAfkari. Executions must stop because we haven't given life to anyone so we shouldn't take their lives either. But their "support" is no more than a "humanitarian" gesture.
2) The number of wars & crimes happening in the West & by the West have become countless. However, Biden who introduced the Crime Bill, Trump who's fucked the planet's future, Pompeo who's the biggest warmonger in power, and many more have been unified "against" the man's death.
3) The day Iran stops executions will be their mourning day. They LOVE the current situation & condemn it, even though they still execute people in many US states & their cops have killed over 4,100 Americans since Colin Kaepernick knelt during the national anthem in 2016.

We should ask ourselves what #Decolonization means to Muslims, Jews, Roma, Afro/ Asian Europeans, People of Colour, LGBTIQ community, CSO's, EU institutions, policy makers of #Europe.

We must decolonise our structures that drive discrimination to built an inclusive Europe. Image
#Decolonization is essential to address structural racism in EU Member States.

Toppling statues of criminals & racist colonialists is essential to make Europe future proof just as education on the real colonial history of Europe. #BlackLivesMattters Image
From #Roosevelt to #Churchill to #LeopoldII: they are visible monuments to the greatest crime in history: #Colonialism.

Therefore, we must prioritise #decolonization to topple the invisible monuments that make our society so structurally racist. #Europe

A hopeful 🧵re: improving #globalhealth through #Decolonizingglobalhealth #antiracism efforts—some examples of positive change:

@DGH_LSHTM & #blacklivesmatter groups gathered signatures from 100's of staff, students, & alumni calling for leadership to examine the school's past
...listen to personal accounts of discrimination.

These groups have influenced the hiring of a postdoc to research it’s #colonial history & legacy. We wrote about Her findings & the calls for change from #DGH & #BLM groups & hope the leadership will act.
Other global #publichealth universities like @dukedecolonize @KarolinskaDGH @EdinburghUni @DecolonizeGh (@HarvardChanSPH) have hosted conferences to critically examine & challenge west/white centric curricula

Hi #twitterstorians this is part 3 of our thread on #Srinivas work. We focus on his views on #anthropology as a discipline linked to the nation. If you would like to see more about #Srinivas writings you can check our blog on #rememberedvillage 👇
theotherfromwithin.com/post/the-remem…
#Srinivas considered that #anthropology was a #colonial tool of governance that used used to 'divide and rule'. His views on the #census as a political tool anticipated the views of scholars such as #Cohn and #Dirks
However, for #Srinivas this was a doubled edged sword. Indian nationalists used the categories politicized by colonial rulers to 'discover' India's past and to create myths in the struggle for #independence

USE THIS #Thread #Paradox of #AntiracistEdLeadership in #Edsystems- thoughts I've been really mulling abt in the past while. Have to admit, I've been sitting on this for a couple weeks. Grateful to those who helped me sift through my thinking <3 Here's to #courageousconversations
True #AntiRacist Leadership can only happen when you are anchored in #communities and you do the work #buildrelationships #seekadvice #love & #beLoved by those who give you #permission & #legitimacy to continue the struggle in boardrooms.
When I became a senior leader in Edu. I was advised that - You cannot be on the streets & in the boardrooms. "its time to choose. Its a different struggle." I didnt choose bc WE deserve to be in the boardroom but THAT choice comes at a #price

As it is obvious that the #Taiwanisation of #ROC drastically accelerated recently, it is probably a good time to share some songs that reflects on the ever-changing #Taiwan Identity & imagine what constitutes a decolonised #TaiwanAnthem that could better represent the people.
1921: 'Taiwanese Cultural Association Theme Song' (臺灣文化協會會歌).
Written by Chiúⁿ Ūi-súi (蔣渭水), a leading figure in Taiwan's resistance movement at the time. It emphasises on the pan-Asian identity「我等都是亞細亞黃色的人種」
and a rather modern understanding of the difference between 'Nationality' (Japanese) and 'Ethnicity' (Han)「漢族血脈日本百姓」There is a history of Taiwanese making the distinction, because of the long historical mismatch between 'colonial nationality' and 'cultural affiliation'

Just published article in @CCPA Monitor (ed.@StuJT) analyzing #inequality & low public investment as drivers behind #Chile’s protests calling for economic justice, and how such calls could signal a break in 40-year increase in inequality there & elsewhere

Since October, millions of Chileans have taken to the streets in defiance of their government, to demand change to economic policies first imposed under dictatorship, replace the dictatorship-era constitution, & challenge the state’s harsh security response

#ChileDesperto
3/10

Chileans are protesting many types of inequalities & injustices

Income inequality in Chile, as shown by top 1% share of income in Fig.1, has trended higher than other countries, soared during the dictatorship (more than other countries) & has stayed high for last 30 years

This #ManufactureOfDoubt script has been used by the #formulaindustry from the very beginning. You can see it from 19th century advertisements through today. The script is a #social one, exactly as @prof_goldberg says - and where #culturalideologies & #politicaleconomy intersect.
Perfect for some #anthropological analysis. In case of #formulamarketing, the social script for #ManufactureofDoubt exploits & enhances existing #culturalideologies of anxiety abt #breastfeeding which have been around since late 19th cent among white, upper class women & spread
#Biomedicalization of #childbirth & #infantfeeding played a key part in deepening these anxieties & facilitated the #normalization of #infantformula by mid 20th cent, esp via medical experts & hospital practices that entailed routine separation & scheduled feeding
