How is immunity to SARS-CoV-2 induced and subsequently controlled?

A new study has uncovered an important role for #complement in the induction of innate and adaptive immunity to SARS-CoV-2. 1/
Complement rapidly opsonized SARS-CoV-2 via lectin pathway. Complement-opsonized SARS2 efficiently interacted w/ dendritic cells (DCs), inducing Type I IFN & pro-inflammatory cytokine responses, which were inhibited by antibodies against complement receptors (CR)3 and CR4. 2/ ImageImage
These findings suggest that complement is important in inducing immunity via DCs in the acute phase against SARS-CoV-2. 3/

Voici comment cela fonctionne ⬇️ (3/7)

1/ A continuation #tweetorial from my last one introducing human leukocyte antigen (#HLA) , the cell surface antigen...

Below, let's briefly review basics of #Luminex testing & "cross-matching."

What/who is Luminex?
2/ In this #tweetorial, we'll answer 3Qs that help us assess a #kidneytransplant recipient's immunological risk:

1. Does this recipient have #DSA* (against HLA-antigens) ?
2. Can the antibodies bind?
3. Can the antibodies activate complement?

*DSA: donor specific antibodies
3/ Q1: How do know if the recipient's serum contains DSA against HLA-antigens?

A1: #Luminex testing, a solid-phase (BEAD) based assay. To perform the test, take the recipient's serum and pipette it into multiple wells - each well has beads coated with #HLA antigens...

National DNA Day:

🧬April 25

🧬Commemorates the day in 1953 when Watson, Crick, Wilkins, Franklin and colleagues published papers in the journal @nature on the structure of DNA

🧬Also commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project in April 2003, took 13 years

DNA Double Helix:

🧬The two #DNA strands are reverse-complements

🧬Reading one strand in #reverse order and exchanging each base with its #complement gives the other strand

🧬A and T are complements, C and G are complements

DNA Sequence: AGTAGCAT
Reverse-Complement: ATGCTACT
In #Each DNA Strand:

🧬Pull the #DNA double helix apart, leaving the two single DNA strands

🧬The population (or occurrence) of every DNA sequence in that single-strand is #equivalent to the population of its reverse-complement DNA sequence in that same single-strand
