Unconditional China engagement is naive since under the conditions of increasing CCP censorship western dialogue with China is no longer free & open-ended. Cooperation with China does not deserve this name when Europeans cannot select their cooperation partners & topics freely /2
That does not mean that the only alternative is blind confrontation and interventionism aimed at regime change, Steve Bannon-style. Chinese citizens have to decide themselves what kind of political system they want to live in. This is not a decision outsiders can make for them /3
Words like, #containment & #constrainment, are useful for academic discussion, but don't constitute a #Strategy. Th objective of China strategy is, or must be, to Deter China's Imperialism on its land & sea borders. This doesn't exclude talking to it abt climate change or Covid19

2/17: @ProfSuryaDeva: India commented on the HK situation which was uncharacteristic but welcome and reflective of its current conflict with China. However, it didn't join the 27 countries to condemn the HKNSL. Prof Deva explained that it mightn't want to overplay the tactic.
3/17: @ProfSuryaDeva: HK is a test case for a battle between 2 political systems. It’s going to unfold anywhere. However, it's not easy to push ours onto China. Making human rights, which has long been put at the back burner, the first term in our interactions with China is key.
