Cosplay is yet another artform one can express their culture. I did this a with my Bishop cosplay by incorporating the colours of the flag through it.
But in the cosplay community there is now a conversation about cultural appropriation, colourism & racism....

@CosplayOfColor
As an Indigenous cosplayer, this is magnified as many cosplayers feel it is ok to use very symbolic cultural items as simple decorative accessories for their costume.
However, if the cosplayer respectfully explains their reasons for incorporating this...
Incorporating items, which aren't sacred in any way, but some SMALL symbol of respect for my culture. It does influence my view.
Note: i say SMALL, because the MY CULTURE IS NOT YOUR COSPLAY arguement ALWAYS applies!

Last year, I organised and hosted the first ever Indigenous Comic Con (@IndigiconA) to come to Australia. At the same time developing my own small platform, INDIGINERD, to help myself deliver this event.
I’ve been apart of, and hosted, a few panels around Indigenous representation in media, particularly the pop culture realms.
I’m a comicbook reader. I’m a D&D player. I’m a Gamer. I’m a cosplayer. I’M AN INDIGINERD.
Over the next week I will be exploring all things popculture.
