NEW: Douglas County Schools board meeting is getting heated as anti-maskers berate the school board. As the Board President issued a "last warning" over crowd interruptions, a man was escorted away by a deputy as he waved something at school board members. #9NEWS #COVID19colorado
Parents have threatened to pull their kids from DCSD if the district doesn't drop the mask mandate recommended by the health department. "I'm sure you understand the financial repercussions of this mass exodus," a parent said during public comment.
A mother makes the somewhat bewildering argument that doctors don't support the school mask mandate but that she cannot find a doctor who will sign an exemption for her children.

CASES

Have been somewhat stagnant for around a week

No evidence of exponential growth (good news).

Been hovering around 1K new cases a day for some time now. Still looking for good sign that we've hit peak
What's it all mean?

Good to see stagnation in cases. Lots of states still growing pretty fast.

Patient count jump is a bit concerning. Let's see if it eases tomorrow.

Bottom line: Things could be worse. I'll take this for now

Take care!

QUICK THREAD ON MASKING IN SCHOOLS

So, we all know. This is a HUGE deal that brings out all sorts of emotions from all sorts of people.

But there's some context I feel is critical to understanding the issue.

Allow me to explain.
#COVID19Colorado

1/
Let's start with @CDPHE guidance issued earlier this month.

Go to the section about QUARANTINE for routine classroom exposures.

You might remember last school year and all of the quarantines that made keeping schools open CHALLENGING

2/

covid19.colorado.gov/practical-guid…
There's a BIG difference between last school year and this one.

Vaccines.

Kids 12+ have had months to get vaccinated.

But kids under 12 still don't have access.

This largely impacts K-6th grade

QUICK #COVID19Colorado Thread

It's early -- and, of course, things could change -- but Colorado showing signs of potentially hitting latest wave peak

Look at cases. Numbers have stabilized over the last 5 days.

Generally right around 900 cases

No significant growth.
Denver...

Just showing very recent stabilization. This is SUPER early. And I wouldn't recommend drawing too many conclusions here.
Hospitalizations are still headed up

Gone from 291 to 478 in 2 weeks

(this metric lags... so even if cases have peaked, we won't see it here for a bit.. .also... there are an unknown # of out-of-state patients here now)

@COHospitalAssn: Do you have any current number on this?

Slight plateau on far right?

DENVER

It's clear Denver is now seeing a steady increase in COVID cases

Nearing 100 in one-week incidence rate

The rise, at least right now, is a bit steeper than the state rise. We should watch that closely.

BREAKING -- @CityofDenver elects to forgo mask mandates.

BUT

chooses to mandate VACCINATIONS for city employees...

AND

high-risk occupations (first responders, home health, hospitals, nursing homes)

(BIG DEAL)

#COVID19Colorado
This is a VERY BIG step for city.

It's one thing to mandate vaccine for its own employees.

It's quite another for city to mandate it in private-sector (high risk jobs)
City is essentially saying this is the most effective way to slow spread

Basically admitting that mask mandate alone won't do it... this is a BIGGER step.
