We investigated two alluvial fan sequences in #Crete, mapped them, did some #radiocarbon and #OSL dating, and measured #cosmogenic 10Be and 36Cl. Both fans roughly span the last glacial cycle, and therefore record large variations in climate.
To correct #cosmogenic nuclide concentrations for post-depositional production, I developed "PostPro". The code computes synthetical burial histories for sedimentary sections, including uncertainties of depth through time and all production uncertainties. github.com/Richard-Ott/Po…

1/ The Neolithic package in Crete appears for the first time around 7000 BC. in Knossos with a community of settlers from Western Anatolia, which did not know the technology of pottery (Pre-Pottery Neolithic).
2/The interesting thing is that recent surveys have shown that within the community, chipped stone objects were found that bear characteristics of the Aegean Mesolithic tradition,which means that this short-lived community came into contact with local Mesolithic hunter-gatherers.
1/ There is the opinion that the Minoan Cretans were a peaceful people, who dominated through trade and their cultural superiority in the Aegean Basin during the first half of the 2nd millennium BC. But maybe was the reality different?

2/ It is clear that the economic prosperity through the involvement in the international trade of the time, as well as the particular Cretan religious worldview contributed decisively to the formation of the identity of both the Minoan elite and the rest of social groups.
3/ At the same time, however, and according to a more penetrating interpretation of the archaeological data, it appears that war was in fact a defining feature of Minoan society and that the model of the warrior-hunter-athlete was one of the dominant expressions of male identity.
1/ The palatial period of Minoan Crete is intertwined with the appearance and consolidation of Linear A', which during the Neopalatial Period was the main writing system. With the appearance of the first palaces, the Linear A must have already been in use.
2/This fact is demonstrated by the existence of the considered oldest sample of Linear A', a part of a tablet from the Southwestern House in Knossos (KN 49), which dates to MM IIA (1800 BC). However, there is the opinion that the birthplace of Linear A was the palace of Phaistos.

‼️#Greek coast guard performed huge illegal #pushback involving 197 people and 7 life rafts on Wednesday! ‼️
A boat carrying 197 people tried to cross from #Turkey to #Italy on Tuesday, but got into bad weather and sat course towards #Crete. Close to the south shore of Crete, they had engine problems and the Greek Coast Guard (HCG) was alerted at 09.00.
#HCG divided the people on two coast guard vessels, 121 men & boys on the first & 76 people (families) on the other. Some of the refugees states they were abused while onboard the HCG vessel. Footage & video testimonies have been provided.

In May 1941, after occupying mainland Greece, the German army attacked #Crete. They staged a massive airborne invasion with the Fallschirmjäger paratroops who were opposed by British and Greek troops and Cretan civilians.
After two weeks of bloody battle, the #Fallschirmjäger defeated the defending troops, but sustained losses so heavy that Adolf Hitler forbade any airborne landings for the rest of World War 2. Over 4000 of them were killed or lost in action.
1/Below is representation of earliest syllabic scripts used in continental #Greece & #Cyprus for pre-Greek& Greek languages. Both mainland Greece & Cyprus owe their first alphabets to Minoan #Crete & Linear A. Cypro-Minoan, modelled on it, represents yet undeciphered language(s)
2/Cypro-Minoan was named such by Sir Arthur Evans, who was behind Knossos excavations. He suspected a Minoan colony in Cyprus allowing scribal transmission to occur.
Cypro-Minoan led to Cypriot syllabary, which along with Linear B, are first scribal systems for writing Greek.
