Long range forecasts show some unusual early season #Cyclone activity over the coming 16 days in the West Pacific and Bay of Bengal.

In particular a storm is shown developing in the Bay of Bengal - traversing the BoB before reversing direction and heading back due East.

The impact of this reversal is remarkable and has potentially positive results in relation to two cyclones which are shown here spinning up on either side of the Phillipines. At the end of this 16-day animation you can see them suddenly reversing direction and heading NE.

The cause of this unusual activity appears to be related to high temperatures/high pressure over the Arabian Sea. In this Water Vapour Transport animation you can see the forecast reversal of wind/water vapour direction taking place over Southern India 12-13 April.

Now that the #rain has stopped for a while in #Chennai, it is time that we get to know what we can expect this week.

1. A Low-pressure area will likely form in the next 2 days in the Southeast #BayofBengal region.

2. Owing to favourable conditions this will further intensify.

3. Preliminary analysis suggests that this system will likely intensify as deep depression and would move towards Coastal #TamilNadu

4. Possibility of this system intensifying into a cyclone exists. Which means a named #cyclone is a possibility

5. Assuming that it becomes a named cyclone, this would be named "#Jawad" named by #SaudiArabia

6. The track that it is likely to take is that it will climb up Northwest - intensify near the coast and move lateral west in between #Chennai and #Pondicherry

Indian Ocean has also warmed but what is worrying is the higher rate of #warming in comparison to other global ocean basins. Data shows that Indian Ocean’s rapid basin-wide warming of ~1degC over the last 60 yrs exceeds that of the global average of ~0.7 degC. #MumbaiMustPrepare

Arabian Sea & Bay of Bengal have also seen consistent warming in past decades. The trend in rise in sea surface temperature for BoB has been 0.16C/decade & 0.18C/decade for AS. Arabian Sea indeed has been warming quite rapidly and impacts are for us to see. #MumbaiMustPrepare

On Wednesday night last week, #CycloneNivar drenched several parts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh. Exactly a week later, #CycloneBurevi is set to cause torrential downpour over southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala

#Burevi is a name suggested by the Maldives, as per the #cyclone naming guidelines set by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). #Burevi is not as strong as its predecessor, #Nivar, as the Bay of Bengal lacks the energy to feed the system further.

They are prop roots. In #mangrove #ecosystem they are adventitious support roots. They Grow down from lateral branches, in a way support trees, with doing other root functions. Additionally roots buffer against damage to coasts & enhance biodiversity & carbon sequestration.

Intense Christmastime cyclone slammed Filipino port city. Despite nighttime darkness, I caught some of my best footage of combo wind/water assault on waterfront. Bonus: weirdly violent wave action in calm eye.

My timestamped footage from #KAMMURI. The real pounding (in the front eyewall) happens from ~11:16 pm to ~12 midnight. Wind & water become one ferocious flow of energy ripping in off the gulf:
