December 26, 2022 is the 160th Anniversary of the largest mass execution in U.S. history. May we remember the 38 Dakota men hanged as an outcome of American expansion and empire. Below I will list their names in remembrance. After, you will find resources to learn more. #Dakota38

Before we list the names, may we remember the Dakota people that also faced confinement, removal, harassment, and violence before, during, and after the Dakota War. An important part of understanding U.S. History that's almost always elided in textbooks and public memory.
159 years ago today, 38 Dakota men were hung in the largest mass hanging in United States history.
38 men hung simultaneously, the day after xmas, with over 4000 settlers watching and celebrating.

Remember the #Dakota38, hanged in Mankato, MN on Dec 26, 1862, under the orders of President Abraham Lincoln. It is the largest mass execution in U.S. history.

The hanging of 38 Dakota came at the culmination of the Dakota War, which started because of a treaty broken by Congress. The Dakota people were being starved to death.

Today, on the anniversary of the hanging of the #dakota38, ordered by Abraham Lincoln, I lament the systemic white supremacy embedded into the foundations of our country that continually exonerates & acquits white land-owning men but unjustly hangs, incarcerates & lynches POC.
