As many as 3-5% of admitted students at these elite Universities were under-qualified and over-privileged, given spots to leverage fundraising.

Lots of these schools barely have 5% Black students and TT faculty. #AcademicChatter #highereducation #highered
The other 15 universities in the lawsuit are @Brown, Cal Tech, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, #Dartmouth, Emory, Georgetown, #MIT, #Northwestern, Notre Dame, Penn, Rice, Vanderbilt and #Yale.

Perhaps economically challenged superstar students will take their talents elsewhere.
I have *never* believed the racial #AffirmativeAction hype they tried to sell—that these alumni admits and full pay, overprivileged AA kids were smarter than we were. Please. Years of teaching affirm that under-resourced students can be so much smarter and more interesting too.

Mining built #NovaScotia!
Government House – the residence and workplace of Nova Scotia’s Lieutenant Governor – features stone quarried from across #NS.
Here's the story of that beautiful building!

When he arrived in #Halifax in 1792, Sir John Wentworth (1737-1820) objected to the dank, less-than-luxurious Governor’s residence. In letters he wrote back to England, he described it as being of “green wood and rotten timbers” and “in danger of falling into the cellar.”
#nspoli Image
So he set about arranging to build a proper country manor for the lieutenant governor’s residence. The site he chose, just off what is now the corner of Spring Garden Road and Barrington St. in #Halifax, had actually been purchased by the government to be...

The first confirmed discovery of #gold in #NovaScotia was made in 1858 at #Mooseland. However, there is reason to believe that gold was found in #NS prior to then - even if in some cases people were unaware of what they had discovered!

An 1868 book by Alexander Heatherington called “A Practical Guide for Tourists, Miners and Investors, and all Persons interested in the Development of the #Gold Fields of Nova Scotia” discusses examples of potential earlier discoveries.

Gold may have been sighted as early as 1578 when explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert was given a patent by Queen Elizabeth to search for #gold and silver in the New World. The patent reserved 20% of any discoveries for the Crown.

We love getting questions about mining, minerals and geology! We were asked about #PointPleasantPark so here are some of our favourite spots in the park that we look forward to visiting when things get back to normal (stay safe in the meantime!).

The Golden Gates at the entrance to #PointPleasantPark are actually iron painted #gold. They were made in 1886 by #Dartmouth's Starr Manufacturing. Starr was best known for its innovative ice skates - even the King of Spain owned a pair. His had real gold plating though!

The Quarry Pond was a quarry in the late 1700s and 1800s, one of over 50 in #PointPleasantPark that helped build its forts, roads and walls. It later filled with water and became the pond we know today.

Gold was discovered in Oldham, northeast of #Halifax airport, in 1861 by Edward Horne and Samuel Isner.

They had noticed a large quartz boulder in the woods on hunting trips. They saw #gold in it and triggered a gold rush that resulted in Oldham mines being some of the most productive in #NovaScotia. The area was mined from 1862-1946 and produced a total of 85,178 ounces.
#nspoli Image
One lot of quartz extracted in 1864 had a phenomenal yield of 103 ounces of #gold per ton. To put that in perspective, successful historical Nova Scotia gold mines often had just one or two ounces of gold per ton.

370 million-year-old "Scotia Grey" #granite from the #Shelburne Island Park #Quarry helped build many #NovaScotia buildings including Shelburne Post Office and the old @chronicleherald building.
Today, the quarry is part of the Islands Provincial Park.

Former #mines and #quarries often become parks and protected areas. This thread shows some examples in #Halifax, #Dartmouth, #Shelbourne, #Truro, #LunenburgCounty and #KemptShore.

#KiwanisPark in #Truro was developed as a gravel pit in the 1930s to help build Route 2. Like a lot of former pits and #quarries, the site has filled with water and become a natural oasis in the heart of the town.

Former mines and quarries are often hidden in plain view! #PointPleasantPark contains 50+ former quarries. The stone was used to build walls and forts in the park. For example, slate from the #QuarryPond helped build the #MartelloTower.

A Gun fetishist dove in to active shooter lock down @Dartmouth college thread tonight claiming to be a parent and harassing students trapped in their forms
#Dartmouth “Mom” was more concerned with excusing guns for shooting than finding out where or how or if her kid was ok. “Mom” talked directly to kids in active shooter lock down and victim blamed them. It was cruelty.
#dartmouthcollege “GUN FETISHIST MOM” and her lies called out.
