Hey #accessibility folks, the New York Times is hiring an Accessibility Visuals Editor!

This is the first role I've ever seen explicitly devoted to accessibility and visuals like this.

It seems like an opportunity to make a huge impact!
nytimes.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/NYT/job/New-Yo…
I'd like to think I was annoying enough to make this happen, but I know that they have been really working to get this in place for a while.

I hope that the right people see this post and apply!
Special thanks to Stuart and Abby and the folks I know working on this behind the scenes (I won't tag them in case they get an influx of questions heh).

This is a really cool chance for someone to influence a whole industry of practitioners! And make the news better for PWD!

A magically informative graphic,

Just a single case study, but so directly revealing of what goes on behind the scenes at airport theater. Somehow a design that makes me very happy.

Really happy to be welcoming back MA Data Journalism alumna @oliviajlawlor from @f_l_o_u_r_i_s_h to @BCUJournalism to talk to current students as part of a double-header on scrollytelling today

#ddj

So, just gave a "hot-take-lightning-talk" to our team about:

*Why timeline maps are the new bar chart races.*

And since readers did not give me much hate for the last days (just "why do you believe in science"), I am ready for discussions & rants on twitter.

As any good rant, it started with jealousy.

An editor sent me this viz by @juliustroeger @moklick @colorfuldata and @elena_erdmann. He asked whether we could do sth similar.
And of course we couldn’t. But also, after some time, I thought:

we shouldn’t.

@juliustroeger @moklick @colorfuldata @elena_erdmann (Btw in general, I love ZeitOnline's team)
The reason is, I feel overwhelmed. Things are happening left and right, north and south. And just when I saw something, it is gone. Still, better than this map where nothing happens. But I guess, timeline maps suffer from 2 things:

Did YOU know the USA has a Federal Data Strategy?

Or that it's part of National US Plan for #OpenGov?

This @POTUS & @WhiteHouse should have told you: e-pluribusunum.org/2019/07/08/how…
@POTUS @WhiteHouse I will talk about how this administration's record of lies, data deletion, censorship & attacks on science has utterly eviscerated the mission defined in the Federal Data Strategy: Public trust in open data & government depends on good governance. #opengov
@POTUS @WhiteHouse Some real -- if polite -- talk about how crazy it is that the @NYTimes & @COVID19Tracking are canonical sources of #opendata about #COVID19 instead of @CDCgov @HHSgov by @dcorliss_astro

-24 Tage.

World leaders on #opengov today. ImageImageImageImage
So far this morning, ministers and civil society representatives to this virtual #opengov summit aren't talking much about what's happened in the USA, the state of its participation, or what it means to @opengovpart. Probably easier & safer not to do so.
@opengovpart Would be good to see ministers, @HelenClarkNZ, & #opengov leaders grapple more with deliberate undermining of trust in government, election integrity, & the press by autocrats, from Hungary to Turkey to Russia to the USA, & share what works to mitigate or reverse it

NEW: Together with @BuzzFeedNews and 108 other media organizations we reveal the #FinCENFiles – our latest cross-border investigation.

Using super secretive bank documents and months of reporting, we expose how banks fail to stop dirty money flows. bit.ly/3kDpxwN
#FinCENFiles reveals $2 trillion worth of payments – revealing big-name banks (you’ve heard of them) moved suspicious money even after promising officials they would fix money laundering controls.
These global giants have moved masses of dirty money tied to mobsters, fraudsters and corrupt regimes – sometimes it's for people they can’t identify.

Vem comigo no fio #opendata

📚10 books to understand data and computational journalism, a thread💻

I have been studying data journalism for the past four years, and, so far, I have collected books and papers that may be very useful to comprehend this topic. #ddj #books #quarantine #AcademicChatter
This time, I will present books, and, to save space, only the title and the name of the author. Except for Precision Journalism, all of them were released recently. Obviously, I did not follow any hierarchy - all these books are equally essential.
Unfortunately, there are only a few women here. There are a lot of incredible girls working with #ddj in newsrooms and independent projects, but I don’t think it works the same way at the university.
