@MaryOToole10 @StaffsPLOD @BDA_Deaf @DEAFvibe @ddeaflinks @SignHealth @ActionOnHearing It's an important distinction, so let's unpack it.

To check whether #Makaton is a natural #language like English or #BritishSignLanguage, let's ask a few questions:
@MaryOToole10 @StaffsPLOD @BDA_Deaf @DEAFvibe @ddeaflinks @SignHealth @ActionOnHearing Are there any native signers of #Makaton? Is it possible for children to be born into a family that only or primarily uses Makaton to communicate in every possible scenario throughout their life?
@MaryOToole10 @StaffsPLOD @BDA_Deaf @DEAFvibe @ddeaflinks @SignHealth @ActionOnHearing Is #Makaton rich enough to express every human communication need, from education to work to philosophy to poetry? Or is it limited in its use?

I live disability theory. I don't need to read a lot of it.

If I was always reading disability theory, I would NOT BE READING other thinkers I want to read, like Cicero, Epictetus, et al.

That photo is the back cover of @epiphanylit . It shows Sara Ahmed's essay "No," a very good essay, alongside my essay, "Some Husbands I Work With."

I had to publish that piece as a "short story" at the time. I told the Editor, "You know this is real, right? I don't feel safe."
Editor at Epiphany? Totally fantastic. Understood that I would change a few minor details, thereby fictionalizing my life, so that the husbands at my work place would not 1) sue me nor 2) hurt me. #AcademicTwitter

@NL_Assoc_Deaf @NLESDCA @NLhumanrights @1940CADASC
Good morning everyone and welcome to Day Four of what should be the hottest #deaf #deafed topic in Canada. Even the Americans are watching this tribunal. On the docket today are two Deaf specialists.
First off is Tammy Vaters. I apologize for misspelling as it tends to correct to Vaders. That is the Educational Assistant or Student Assistant. She was trained and experienced in Ontario and knows how to do her job. Yes I confirmed this beforehand.
Then in the afternoon is expected to be Dr. Kristin Snoddon. She is a doctor with her areas of Expertise
Inclusive education policy; Sign language planning and policy in early childhood; Literacy; Bilingualism; Disability studies - her bio from TMU.

Good morning #deaf it's day three of the @NLESDCA vs @kimagreening human rights trial over Carter's education. Hope @NL_Assoc_Deaf and @1940CADASC are paying attention!

On the docket today is quite a list. 5 people including former deputy minister of education @GovNL
@NLhumanrights informed me there will be live captioning today. It's my understanding that it's an individual typing out the transcript.

Bear in mind it's a deaf person tweeting live. Info may be missed or misunderstood. I'll do my best.

Good luck

This is the start of a series of tweets I plan to do on a human right crisis in NFLD: special needs education. To be honest it's coast to coast but #nfld is in pretty bad shape for #deafeducation and #HumanRights
But first... monks blend tea. Hot.
The reason for a centralised Deaf school is that resources to educate the Deaf is extremely limited. #nfld in its infinite wisdom decided that local communities had the resources to mainstream Deaf children and only needed to be checked on once in awhile.

I was minding my business last night, reading tweets about the Bills vs Chiefs game when the below tweet caught my attention.

It's been a while since I've done a faith-based Twitter thread, but Greg Locke's comments have compelled me to speak up. Put on your seatbelts! 🧵 1/14
Greg Locke’s comments are the very reason why I started @AutismFaithNet. His statements are HIGHLY OFFENSIVE to me as a Christian AND mom of TWO sons with autism, with one that also has a rare form of epilepsy. 2/14
My boys mean EVERYTHING to me. It would be easy to write a post about how amazing they are, assuring everyone that neither one of them has a demon. But I think it’s more important to highlight another point… 3/14

It's hard to stop listing #DeafBlind doings. Be found guilty of treason by a show trial! Flee the Hapsburgs' secret police! Or humler tasks, such as patiently saving money from making brooms to buy a house. But my point remains: #HelenKeller was not a wonder.

My deaf mom built & wired avionics for helicopters including choppers used by the first woman to fly for the #NYPD. She was once in a Budweiser commercial during the “For all you do, this Bud’s for you!” advertising phase. #WomenInspire #MothersDay #Deaf (1/7)
In ’88 Mary Lowery was the first woman assigned to the NYPD’s Aviation Unit, the same year Mom was wiring avionics for Heli-Dyne in Hurst, TX. One helicopter they built was for the NYPD and their 1st ever with a “bambi bucket”. (2/7)
When the helicopter was complete the NYPD gave mom a baseball hat w/their logo. Dad used Mom's to try to get out of a traffic ticket. I was there & acted as his interpreter. Dad told the truth to me & I interpreted a better lie to the cop. We got off.We didn’t need the hat. (3/7)

A request for networking help:

You guys there is SO MUCH bullshit going on in MT in EI/deaf ed. The entire state and all deaf people, really, but cartoon-villain-like shit happening with the kids. (🧵 1/)

TL;DR how does one whistleblow Part C violations?

#deaf #deaftwitter
I know it's not just MT, and I know I'm one of many people fighting battles in this war. But there are some specifics here (& I have already done a LOT of work on this) so please FIRST read through my little preamble thread and THEN reply with suggestions <3 (2/
The fundamental problems are (a) a complete lack of services (not like, we don't provide enough support. Like, no one qualified do to that lives in this state.) (B) An old guard set of (hearing) people running everything- the same people who have been running it for 20 years (3/

This is crazy! 🙆🏽‍♂️🙌🏽 Like yesterday I had drafted my experience with a number of #Deaf students and was still asking if there was anything that is been done for them as a community of people in that category! N now this!?
Nigeria should accept the tech ohh
So I just sat in a BRT bus partly filled with Pupils from #Ikejajuniorhighschool Yesterday .
They all stood (standing) there were two woman acting up cos they were around them. Dyu know why? They were Deaf some of them Both D & D and they were all trying to make.....
Conversation the only best way they knew how to!- Gesticulation, facial expressions and sign language. Most of them smiling and exclamating as they communicated!
I was surprised at first when they boarded cos they were too silent for Secondary school pupils. #Solohtolz

GREAT WOMAN OF MATHEMATICS: DAME DR. KATHLEEN TIMPSON OLLERENSHAW, 1912-2014. Dr. O grew up in Manchester, England. She became deaf at age 8. An inspiring headmistress at the Ladybank Montessori School nurtured her interest in mathematics. #deaf #deafpride #deafHOH #GWOM 1/7 Image
She credited her deafness with helping her find her passion so early, as mathematics is accessible to deaf and hearing alike. The headmistress gave her early training in rigor, insisting on "exactitude, formal proofs, and total accuracy at all times--with checks." She studied 2/7

So I'm at a physics conference this week in Lecce, Italy. Some of you wonder how that works given that I'm Deaf and probably don't know Italian Sign Language. Well... 1/N #deaf #interpreters #asl #access #physics
In most cases, I can just request ASL interpreters (yes, American Sign Language interpreters) months in advance. Who pays for it? Good question. That's something I've fortunately been mostly kept out of the loop on, rather than the discussions that happen at the conference! 2/N
But so we get terps set up months in advance, great. They're ASL, because I've barely had the chance to pick up any other language and it's my secondary mode of communication. ASL terps are hard to find in non-English speaking countries... UK too! UK uses BSL primarily. 3/N

Today is #NationalDogDay! Lets examine what roles our 4-legged friends have played in #DisHist!
Artistic representations of dogs accompanying #blind singers, beggars etc from across the world suggests that they have often worked and lived alongside #disabled handlers..1/ The blind man wears patched clothing and seems to be a beggar: he is led by a skinny dog with its ribs showing. The blind man appears to be holding a stick to guide him as well.A medieval color illustration from the Book of Hours shows a blind man receives sight from Christ while his dog looks on.
In this #earlymodern illustration of the Dance of Death, Death cuts the rope that links the blind man and his dog: “I cut you off from your guide.”
The blind man responds, saying, “I cannot take a step without my dog (hund).”
#DisHist #NationalDogDay..2/ The engraved illustration shows Death on the left as a skeleton, confronting a man with a hat and cloak, who appears to be a blind and is led by a dog. Death is using scissors to cut the rope used to lead the dog.

Ardavan Guity & @jahochcam (with a pre-recorded intro) on ethics concerning language documentation of #signlanguages in #Deaf communities. #wfd2019 Image
A very interesting story here is Ardavan being involved in language documentation as an informant at first, but becoming more and more involved, gaining experience and skills along the way (by interaction, collaboration, sharing), ending up a researcher! #wfd2019
Involving the #Deaf community and individual participants is crucial. Communication, information, consent. This enriches the collaboration between researchers and informants and gives agency and empowerment to language users! #wfd2019

@mesch_joo, @crathmann & @DLilloMartin presenting the aims and policies of the @SignLangLingSoc at #wfd2019.

Research on #signlanguages should:
- Promote and include #Deaf researchers
- Give back to the community (inform policy/lobby)
- Respect Deaf communities and diversity Image
There is tight collaboration with the WFD, who are sometimes better suited to lobby for #Deaf and #language rights to governments around the world (through national/regional associations)
Q: There are hearing researching #signlanguages without knowing how to sign, what do you think about this?
A: Increase the num of Deaf researchers and support collaborations between Deaf and hearing. Hearing researchers encouraged to sign! [signs hearing @DLilloMartin] #wfd2019 Image
