As a trainee doctor working in government hospital, working with poorest in the country, I believed that education can solve most problems.

How wrong I was!

A thread on decision making.
As a trainee doctor I saw suffering of people that I attributed to lack of education. They were superstitious, had bizzare (IMO) ideas about illness and recovery, hardly ever followed medical advice esp about follow up of treatment.
I firmly believed that as more and more people get school education, this will go away. People will have access to good information and they will make better decisions resulting in better life.

Years ago, my boss taught me something important about choice.
We were recruiting for an open position at the office. The role was urgent and we needed to fill it ASAP. A contract depended on it. So, we hired a recruitment agency and the shortlisted candidates finally got to the interview stage.
The interview was a disappointment. The candidates barely made the cut and we were worried about the looming deadline for filling the position. That day, my boss said something that stuck.

Excited to share latest article, published with @SpringerNature in @PalCommsOA, on why we might want to pay closer attention to experts’ learning when advising #policymakers. Given the timing: a short(ish) thread on its relevance for #COVID19, below /1👉🏻
In the aftermath of the #coronavirus pandemic, we’ll need an evaluation of ‘what happened’ and ‘what went wrong’. For the whole picture, we can’t just rely on the loudest or the most visible voices. We need to turn to those scientific advisers whose stories go largely untold. /2
Through their engagements with policymakers/politicians, experts learn the delicate balancing act of #scienceadvice. They learn what is and isn’t appropriate behaviour, what is and isn’t politically acceptable, and to draw the line where #science ‘ends’ and #politics ‘begins’. /3

"Remember, these models are always wrong.” -@drsanjaygupta

This kind of statement reinforces our misconception of what models are: *decision tools* that give our *best estimates* of future given certain assumptions/inputs— helping us improve decision making under uncertainty.
These models have lots of inputs, which change based on new information like states opening back up or asymptomatic transmission etc.

Updating a model doesn’t make previous projections wrong, since they were forecasts based on current information and assumptions and *SHOULD change* as new information reveals itself.

This morning I woke up thinking about the world after #COVID19 when I got this message from my friend @maxwellubah and felt it was #TooGoodNotToShare

Sitting down and thinking about the #COVIDー19 pandemic and the restrictions of movement, here's my #ThreeBigLessons
#Leadership is all about #decisionmaking

The world was slow to react to the virus. #WorldLeaders neglected it & even described it like the common flu. By the time they woke up, it had become widespread with thousands dead.

Most deaths outside Wuhan were completely avoidable
Today, we have shut down our airspace and restricted movements. This same decision could have been taken when the first case of coronavirus incidence happened. Well, as they say, it's never too late to correct a wrong action.

Key lesson here is that #LeadersAreDecisive

This has clearly been a challenging time in markets but more importantly in life. I shared this note with our investment team over a week ago. I encouraged everyone to keep a journal to document their behaviour and emotions. I’m sure @farnamstreet has more to add! 1/n
I imagine each of you experienced a roller coaster of emotions over the past couple of weeks as markets gyrated. This is normal for times like this. But it does present a good opportunity to learn about our emotional behaviour in times like this...2/n
It can help us to improve our #decisionmaking when the next #financialcrisis hits us. I would encourage everyone to keep a #journal of their emotions, observations & conclusions. “Today feels like the bottom”....

@justin_yopp talks about an issue near and dear to my heart — #ParentsWithCancer. Image
#Parenting is rarely discussed with oncologist even though it affects treatment #DecisionMaking. Parents are more willing to go through brutal treatments, parental role satisfaction and efficacy are decreased after treatment.
And children are at greater risk for internalizing (anxiety and depression) and externalizing symptoms.

Here's the thing about decision-making that so many overlook. U need your skill/expertise of course. As u execute (think/analyze), u have a constant, simultaneous inner dialogue re yr belief+confidence in what u are contemplating. #decisionmaking #confidencefactor
This feeling of whether what u r thinking is right or not is 1)required to make a decision 2)foundation on which u make the decision 3)an emotion. AND, u can make it explicit. U can become conscious of how those beliefs+feelings r creating decision context. #affectiveprediction
Doing so interrupts biases - especially confirmation bias. It helps dilute the need to be right. It can also interrupt recency bias. Understanding what u r feeling+why goes further than any other method to circumvent the #biases of #behavioralfinance. #competitiveedge

Startups enjoy ridiculing suits (& bus school profs!) for their focus on strategic planning rather than iterative learning, MVPs, etc... The tension betwn strategic planning and iterative learning has finally been resolved by @joshgans @sstern_mit @wu_jane
The Paradox of Entrepreneurship - ranking alternative viable strategies requires knowledge that can only be gained through experimentation, but experimentation to resolve uncertainty ultimately results in some level of commitment that can foreclose particular strategic options.
Implication for entrepreneurs: "to reject passivity in the process of commercializing their ideas, to recognize the shadow cost of learning by experimentation, and to apply "Test Two, Choose One" to guide their choice process." #startup #strategy #DecisionMaking

Last month a friend asked me "what's the best resource you've read thus far on human decision-making?" 1/

While I don't agree with every word of it, How to Measure Anything is quite possibly the most important and useful book I've ever read on any topic. Here's why. 3/

A perfect #TooGoodNotToShare example of the dilemma we often face in any decision making.

A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the other not....
Only one child played on the unused track, the rest on the operational track.

A train is coming, and you are just beside the track interchange. You can make the train change its course to the unused track and save most of the kids.

What will you decide??

However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the unused track would be sacrificed.

Or would you rather let the train go its way?

Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make................

have u thought enough !!!!
