It is relatively recently that democracy has come to be equated with elections.
The Ancient Greeks knew that elections lead to short-termism and polarisation. They mean only a narrow few have true power. In their words, they create oligarchies.

There are better ways to practice democracy, being used around the world. To make government work, we need to do participation & representation better, not less.

Take soda. Drinking too much soda is killing people. So should we stop drinking beverages? No, we should drink healthier beverages. Same for democracy - it’s time to cut unhealthy participation and replace it with healthier participation. @PublicAgenda

On this first image, one can see that some deliberative processes develop more quickly than others, such as citizens' juries and citizens' assembly.
But is this result really spread worldwide, or is it specific to some countries?

Some countries have indeed sharply increased the number of internal deliberative processes, such as Japan at some point, the United-Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and others.
