Biden is going to sign an Executive Order today. We'll see what the final text says, but as an #abortion provider here's the context I can share:
HHS doesn't distribute or prescribe medication abortion. If federal employees need medication abortion, they go to abortion clinics.
As of today, states like Texas and Mississippi don't have #abortion clinics that are providing care, and telemedicine abortion is illegal. Unless the EO grants access to teleMAB to every person in every state, how will this actually get medication abortion to Texans?
EMTALA can't make anyone provide an #abortion or protect us from being arrested. This law requires stabilization in emergency medical situations - "emergencies" are defined broadly and allow for A LOT of subjectivity. The same gray areas I've spoken extensively about will remain.

🧵Thinking about the 15,000 Haitian refugees held under the #DelRio bridge for weeks. I can’t stop thinking about them. I keep returning to the thought that they never tried to leave that spot. The river was behind them, metal fencing in front. As you can see, it’s quite a large
2) area. It’s important to note that while there, they were on US land and in Border Patrol custody. This means @USBPChief was responsible for their safety and well-being. Reports are now coming out (and they match interviews done by my group) that some received one sandwich &
3) one bottle of water a day. Others stated they received nothing. They report horse patrol tried to keep them from going north from the river (the actual physical border) & from going back south to get food because their families were starving. People say to me that I must be

I have been asked several times why isn’t Mexico doing anything…

Here is how the chamber of commerce president of Acuña explained it to me: No one going through Mexico has ANY intention of staying— Migrants are just passing through… 1/3
2/3… The Mexican government is angry that all of this falls on them because people are in pursuit of the American Dream. The chamber of commerce president of Acuña tells me at one point, the city had thousands of people in a park after the U.S. closed the crossing…
3/3… He tells me when migrants hoping to get into the U.S. learned they faced deportation— 3,000+ migrants, mostly Haitians streamed into the city and took shelter in homes, disrupting Acuña for days because they wanted to get across and thought they could wait it out. #DelRio

🧵 Comments by Haitian leaders from Miami on #DelRio and treatment of refugees:

Marleine Bastien, Family Action Network Movement, Miami said:
As leaders of the Haitian-American community, we came here to witness the treatment of our sisters & brothers who seek refuge and safety.
2) We came at the invitation of DHS Secretary Mayorkas after meeting with him. What we heard and what we saw troubled us deeply. We call on President Biden to respect the rights of due process and provide humanitarian parole to our Haitian brothers and sisters.
3) Let it be clear, this crisis at the border is the result of failed U.S. foreign policy that has supported corrupt leaders while neglecting the plight of the Haitian people.

Thread: A day in the migrant camp of about 14,000, mainly Haitians, near the border bridge in Del Rio, Texas.
2/@CBP doesn’t allow press to enter the camp from the U.S. and closed the border bridge, so I crossed to the East, drove through Mexico and waded across the Rio Grande.
3/Haitian migrants I met spoke Creole to each other, but many also spoke Spanish, some French and English. These guys told me in French that they were deciding whether to return to the camp or stay in Mexico.

The refugees that have fled to #DelRio are human beings fleeing the most desperate circumstances. Violence, extreme poverty and political oppression.
nytimes.com/2021/09/16/us/…
They’re not coming to endanger our lives, they’re coming to save their own. Haitians have added great contributions to our nation in medicine, education and science; as well as other immigrants who have contributed to a better quality of life for all Americans.
We must have compassion and empathy for these desperate families, women and children. We are a nation of immigrants and refugees who have fled to the shores of America for a better life.
