As an aside: I don't think it is possible to have a debate about the Obama record without also understanding that it was shaped and defined (confined) by structural limitations in our democracy that have only grown worse, not better, since then. #DemDebate #DemDebate2 1/
Structural limitations that, btw, got zero questions during any of the first two series of debates and that will hamper any future Democratic president be it Bernie or Biden or Buttigieg or Warren or Harris. #DemDebate #DemDebate2 2/
The Framers thought that democracy meant having democratic institutions that looked like and were representative of the nation as a whole - in Adams' words that were an "exact portrait, a miniature." #DemDebate #DemDebate2 3/

The candidates ranked:
Harris won, but not like last time. She was hit repeatedly, but didn't waiver. She was still better than anyone else. Gabbard attacked her viciously and she still held up. Gabbard's real message is that she's running for Biden's VP. She gave him cover.
Yang was surprisingly strong. He really hung onto his message of UBI and it was compelling.

The biggest loser was De Blasio who never belonged. Bennet wasn't a good debater and seemed unable to get across a consistent message.
Booker started slow, picked up, ended strong and positive.
Inslee had a far better debate this time. He knows that he's running for something else and is really powerful for a Cabinet position.
Gillibrand had a great debate and tag teamed well with Harris. Would make a super AG.

I can’t believe all these old white Libs are blaming our first African American President for all their troubles.

SMH, racist much, Dems?

#DemocraticDebate2020 #DemDebate2
Tfw old white Libs sold you out because Orange man bad.....

#DemDebate
It’s super weird that Dems are just finding out tonight that Obama was a garbage President.

It’s almost like the entire Lib party are just grifters looking for money and power.

Imagine how they’ll feel when they find out Obama deported more illegals than any other President.

This is your official #DemDebate2 night thread. I am just getting settled here, drinking water only because my liver is still recovering from last night, and I turn on CNN and this dude is preaching to the audience about RAAAAACCCISM! I think he's the head of the DNC. #Hectic
I can already tell I'm going to have to risk gastro upset and head for the liquor cabinet. This is going to be a disaster. #PJMDrunkBlog #DemDebate2

Both #DemDebate and #DemocraticDebate trended immediately prior to, during, and after the first night of the July Democratic presidential debates. We performed some comparative analysis of the traffic mentioning each candidate.

cc:
@ZellaQuixote
@ZellaQuixote Which candidates received the most discussion? Warren and Sanders topped the list, followed by Buttigieg and Williamson. We included tweets containing the candidates first name, last name, or Twitter account, excluding common first names that introduced ambiguity.
@ZellaQuixote Next, we performed sentiment analysis on the traffic mentioning each candidate. Overall, the average sentiment scores were higher during the first half of the debate than the second, with John Delaney experiencing the most drastic reduction.

"I'm running for president because our country is running out of time. It is even bigger than the emergency of the Trump presidency. Ask yourself how somebody like Donald Trump ever gets within cheating distance of the Oval Office in the first place. 1/5
"It doesn't happen unless America is already in a crisis -- an economy that's not working for everyone, endless war, climate change. We have lived this in my industrial Midwestern hometown. My generation has lived this as long as we have been alive. 2/5

Four months after the birth of my son Carl, I was diagnosed with ALS. I had coverage, but the insurance company broke their promise. I had to sue them to cover my ventilator. Now I pay $9k per month in medical bills.

Many people have stories like mine. Do you?

If school desegregation is “political poison” today it is in part because terms like “forced busing” & “de facto segregation” are repeated w/o context.

Here is some of what I learned in studying the history of “busing” for my book “Why Busing Failed" ucpress.edu/book/978052028…
First, school buses made the modern public school system possible. Number of students transported to school at public expense in US expanded from 600K in 1920 to 20M in 1970. Buses enabled multi-grade elementary schools and comprehensive high schools, rather than one-room schools
Buses had long been used in the South, as well as New York, Boston, and many other northern cities, to maintain segregation. These were mandatory assignments, but white parents did not oppose this “forced busing” whybusingfailed.com/anvc/why-busin…

I keep hearing [men] say that a female/female ticket would have no chance at winning. Let's step back and examine this for a moment, shall we? (thread style.)
Consider 2008. Minority communities came out in droves to vote for Barack Obama (4% higher than the previous election) while a higher number of white voters stayed home (down 1% from 2004.) Image
At the time, the NYT broke it down like this: "In last year’s presidential election, younger blacks voted in greater proportions than whites for the first time and black women turned out at a higher rate than any other racial, ethnic and gender group."

"Biden takes flak on race and busing. But his views may still mirror America’s" by @isaacstanbecker. This is a good piece that quotes historian Brett Gadsden, whose book "Between North and South" is the best place to start to understand Biden and "busing" washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/06…
To understand the #DemDebate2 exchange between #KamalaHarris & Joe #Biden, you have to understand that "busing" has been used since the 50s as a code word to oppose school integration. I cover this history in "Why Busing Failed" & the book's website whybusingfailed.com/anvc/why-busin…
White parents in the North organized after Brown v Board to maintain segregated schools, using euphemisms like "busing" & "neighborhood schools" to maintain segregated schools without explicitly saying they didn't like black or Latinx students #DemDebate2 whybusingfailed.com/anvc/why-busin…

The mettle it took to demand this moment and refuse to be silenced is what makes @KamalaHarris a leader.
"As the only black person on this stage, I’d like to speak on the issue of race." politico.com/story/2019/06/…
“Anyway, my time is up,” Biden said, though no one had called time.
That metaphor is so telling.

Even more odd is the fact that he sold his place for $1.00 ten days before his trusty Perkins Coie lawyer, Marc Elias, filed his financial disclosure. Hmmm.
Sadly we may never know what Cory’s good old “Newark Now Inc” was up to they failed to file any returns for THREE years and finally had their tax exempt status removed.

The Democratic field is effectively #Biden, #Warren, #Sanders, #Harris, and #Buttigieg

#DemDebate2
To clarify, I'm going by poll averages over the past few months. I don't think the debates have materially changed the dynamics of the race or altered the top tier.
That said, I think Biden's recent downward drift and Warren's rise will continue.

First question goes to Bernie Sanders. "Will taxes go up for middle class in Sanders admin [because of health care program, etc]? How do you sell to voters?"

Sanders directs this where it should go by highlighting how Americans will pay less for health care. #DemDebate2

GOP will attack Democrats for supporting "socialism," even if they support the weakest progressive policies. Because they know it's effective in ensuring Democrats aren't effective opposition to their agenda #DemDebate2

Here we go again! Welcome to my live tweet of the Democratic debate aka the roast of Joe Biden. Let’s get it.
The higher tax rates that Bernie is proposing for any American will more than pay for themselves. If you are middle class and Bernie raises your taxes, you will still be saving money because your healthcare will be free.
Biden is wrong. We should demonize the rich. Hoarding money when others are starving is immoral.

Who killed it in the first night of the first #DemocraticDebate of 2020? Let's ask the denizens of Twitter! #DemDebate

cc: @ZellaQuixote
We downloaded tweets containing "is killing it" or "killed it" for a period of roughly three hours beginning at the start of the debate). Here are the words that most frequently preceded "killed it" or "is killing it.” Most are the names of candidates.
We then aggregated the tweets by which candidate was being referenced. Slightly over half of Twitter concluded that Elizabeth Warren killed it in the first debate, followed by Julián Castro and Cory Booker.
