A small thread on voting in this weekend's Australian (or earlier, if you haven't already voted) election.
It leverages the clean & clear graphics of the @AusElectoralCom and the less clean 😉humor of @thejuicemedia
Yay preferential voting system!
Yay #democracysausage #auspol
An overview of how to fill in your ballot is covered here:

Yesterday a government without a credible climate action policy won the climate election. How did this happen and what does it mean? Here’s a thread...

Great change is non-linear. History is unpredictable. Elections come and elections go but we must retain belief in what is possible and execute our best plans to make it so. Standing from where we are today, Australia can still have a flourishing future.
Bitterness, fatalism, condescension or sneering won’t lead us to where Australia needs to be. Don’t hate on beautiful Queensland! We have to find a way through the climate emergency and our best chance will come if we can manifest a shared spirit and purpose as a nation.

Australian democracy is amazing.

Aussies are voting today. All of them, because voting is compulsory. Lines are short. Postal voting is easy. There's no voter suppression. No gerrymandering, because district lines are independently drawn. And everyone enjoys a #democracysausage.
And apart from that one incident at Engadine Maccas in 1997 after the Cronulla Sharks lost the Super League final, Australian politics is pretty clean.
It looks like it’ll be an enormous electoral upset in Australia as the conservative government looks set to win after losing more than fifty polls in a row, then losing exit polls.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen as big of an electoral surprise in my lifetime. #auspol

Lots of people have been telling me it's great that Australia voted yes to marriage equality in the recent referendum.

I have to explain that it wasn't a referendum, is not legally binding, and was an expensive attempt to get a different result than what the public wants. 1/
Even if we ignore the fact that it's abhorrent to be asking the majority whether a minority should have basic human rights, the government has known for years that there's strong majority support for marriage equality.

Because sampling and statistics are a thing. 2/
Australia has mandatory voting laws. We have amazing voter turn-out, well resourced polling places, and a culture that celebrates democracy with a sausage sizzle. #democracysausage

A referendum would have forced marriage equality, so we didn't get that. 3/
