On the 50th anniversary of the signing of The Declaration of Independence, the mayor of D.C., one Roger Weightman, asked Thomas Jefferson to attend.

Jefferson was in poor health, and very near the end of his life.

So Jefferson wrote a letter to decline. He knew the journey was impossible for him. Ten days after penning this letter, Jefferson was dead.

While Jefferson is not a perfect messenger, (none of our founders were) his letter explained what #IndependenceDay meant to him.

I've decided to put it in a thread, so that we might know the minds of the folks who were THERE when we broke the chains that lawless kings thrust upon us.

Please read it all, Jefferson was dichotomous at times, and it's not very long of a read.

Hell yeah it sucks, and it's yet another product of Wall St. greed.

Our gov't IS BOUGHT.

THAT'S NOT DEMOCRACY.

Folks keep sayin' we gotta save democracy, but that ain't true.

We don't have a democracy anymore.

ProTip folks: you live in an oligarchy. Our gov't hasn't worked correctly for decades.

If it did, we wouldn't be here right now.

#fact

Because it's BOUGHT.
2/
And why?

Because we DON'T VOTE.

I ain't bringin' receipts for this one, you know the truth.

AMERICANS DON'T VOTE.

Sure you and your family might, but all of us are adding up to about 40%.

In a fucking DEMOCRACY.😡
