"One of the ideas we had with #InterPlanetary was, 'What would it take to make science hedonistic? And instead of telling people to do it, you'd have to tell people to STOP doing it?"

David Krakauer: "Do you have a favorite model or metaphor for #time?"

@JamesGleick: "You've already mentioned a river; that's everybody's favorite. Borges said time is a tiger. People talk about it as a thread. We ONLY talk about time in metaphors." Image

A THREAD on heat.
A personal view on how cities should react on #ClimateChange and #heatisland effect.
#Proportion
Most important is proportion. The hotter the climate the narrower the streets are. There are reasons why streets around the mediterranean are narrower than they are typically in germany.
There is an unlucky proportion where the buildings are not narrow enough to provide shade but too close together to let the heat radiate away at night. It depends on orientation, latitude, weather at night. Not easy. Historical streets have mostly good proportions by trial.

Talking about amendments and specifics around land use is enough to make anyone feel a bit lost, it can feel inaccessible, it can feel complex. But this is an issue that impacts all of us, as residents and/or workers of the largest city in Washington State.
What does #MHA and #density mean? As a resident of the West Seattle Junction, it means that my #neighborhood is #walkable and dense. I love being able to walk out the door and support lots of great #small #businesses.
My husband is able to walk or bike to work while there are several buses that will bring me to City Hall a block or two away. The Junction becomes the site of a weekly farmer’s market and several block party style events during the summer.
