Kobe Dimock-Heisler (an autistic man) would have turned 24 today had he not been fatally shot by Brooklyn Center police officers Cody Turner and Brandon Akers on August 31, 2019 while they responded to a mental crisis call. (BCPD Steven Holt & Joseph Vu were on scene as well)
The killing of Kobe Dimock-Heisler wasn't widely known to the public until convicted felon Kim Potter killed #DaunteWright during the #DerekChauvinTrial. Potter was the police association pres & directed Kobe's shooters to "shut [their] body warns off & don't talk to each other."
“Autism is not a crime…This is why the police department needs to be defunded.” — Jason Heisler

Derek Chauvin, convicted murderer formerly with the @MinneapolisPD, was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for killing #GeorgeFloyd.

This is now the longest sentence ever given to a former cop for a killing committed in the line of duty.

unicornriot.ninja/2021/ex-cop-de…
After being sentenced, #DerekChauvin was sent straight to prison with 199 days credit for time he’s already served in jail.

Judge Cahill said the 270 month sentence he handed Chauvin is based on his "abuse in a position of authority & the "cruelty" he showed to #GeorgeFloyd.
Chauvin was found guilty of unintentional second-degree murder, third degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in one of the most historic murder trials of the century that concluded on April 20, 2021.

THREAD

This a plea to journalists.

When someone dies under a pile of officers, the death is NOT an isolated event.

And there are many more deaths than just the death of George Floyd.

Let's start with 4/19/21 death of #MarioGonzalez

Body camera released yesterday

1/
Gonzalez was held prone (on stomach) and handcuffed for multiple minutes before he stopped breathing

Happened in Alameda, CA, day before George Floyd verdict.

It's generated quite a few stories now that body cam is out

2/
usatoday.com/story/news/nat…
It's natural for people to see this and instantly think of Floyd

But here's the thing,

Our ongoing #PRONE investigation has found dozens of other deaths just like the deaths of Floyd and Gonzalez

How many?

My list now has 118 names. People like Roy Nelson. Died in 2015

The only feelings to center on are those of black community
Wrong use of this quote during the week of #DerekChauvinTrial

Some people “feel” things if a white male faces accountability
Amy Cooper’s feelings: call cops
Racism & racism lite has always focused on “feelings” #BLM
When @ayshakhoury or @uche_blackstock were authentic in their feelings: ended careers

Black female physician #DrSusanMoore having “knowledge” or a “voice”
while DYING
made others
*feel* “intimidated.”

This is part of a known pattern for WOC
@COCoQC
#BLM #BlackintheIvory
This is a repeating pattern of “feelings” used against tellers of uncomfortable truths that #MLK described in the letter from the Birmingham jail.

Seeking order > justice or overpolicing are all to protect only certain “feelings” of “security” while those like #adamtoledo die.

@retrofitness Hello, I need to reach out to you all about an racially antagonizing incident that happened last night at your Edison, NJ location. I just joined your gym last week and now I have no choice but to cancel my membership.
@retrofitness This is the #BlueLivesMatter flag hanging up in the middle of the gym area. My sister said this flag was never hanging up before but suddenly it is hanging on the day of #DerekChauvinTrial #DerekChauvinVerdict Why? Is there a subliminal message being communicated?
This incident happened last night and I called the Edison,NJ @retrofitness to resolve this issue and a woman who said she was in charge got very defensive with me and said that there was nothing wrong with the flag.

1/ A few observations and takeaways from the #DerekChauvinTrial and the media coverage of it as well as the surrounding events:
2/ Despite the intense media pressure, the jury got it right based upon the evidence. #DerekChauvinTrial
3/ Speaking of media pressure, the media coverage was predictably over-the-top and was ready-set to inflame tensions even more if the verdict was "not guilty." Linking other incidents to George Floyd serve no purpose but to intensify. apnews.com/article/columb… #DerekChauvinTrial

I am relieved that #DerekChauvin was convicted today for murdering George Floyd. I breathe in this rare moment when the public recognized the value of a Black man's life and held an officer accountable for taking it. I am, as always, hopeful. And yet...
I am concerned about the political naïvete in some of the public commentary about the #DerekChauvinTrial. Some well-meaning and excited folks are saying things like, "This sends a message to police departments that they have to respect Black lives."

But... does it?
Think about how extreme #DerekChauvin's actions had to be to elicit this outcome.

Observe that the prosecutor made clear that the case was *only* about the 9 minutes and 29 seconds that Chauvin knelt on George Floyd's neck.

1/ As we move toward this evening's verdict, I wanted to finalize a few of my observations from watching most of the trial from the very beginning. #DerekChauvinTrial
2/ For me, there was really no debate about anything that happened before George Floyd was taken to the ground. Both sides essentially agreed that the use of force prior to this part of the confrontation was lawful. #DerekChauvinTrial
3/ The focus, then, was on what the prosecution had to prove regarding the prone restraint and what the defense could do to cast doubts on the prosecution's theory of the case. #DerekChauvinTrial

As you consider the closing arguments in the #DerekChauvinTrial...

... please consider this:

In 1995 -- 25 years prior to the death of George Floyd -- the US Dept of Justice warned law enforcement of the potential dangers of prone restraint

this is NOT a poorly understood phenomenon

And... best practices are crystal clear

Note this line from report
The conclusion of 1995 remains the conclusion of today
