The Design Sprint 🚀
Special mention @jakek @Jicecream @AJSmartDesign 🙌

A Thread 🧵

Who has not gone from the phase where we searched for the solutions to big problems that arrived in our designs and surpassed them to get the desired outcomes?

#DesignSprint #uxdesign #Remote
Obviously, All of us!! Right? You are like, “what do you think of us? 🙌 talking again about some polemic talks.”
But! But! But! Nothing is our fault; we were surfing here & there and got this very nervy but at the same time exceptionally convincible notion which hits directly to our thoughts & steers to words of today’s thread.

It’ll either be an Efficient Failure or a Flawed Success.

I have interviewed a lot of #designers and #researchers this year. This is my round up of some of the issues I have seen in the industry in 2020:

1. Roughly 80% of the designers I speak to say something like “I haven’t had much opportunity to think about accessibility”...
Many organisations have cultural issues meaning they don’t prioritise accessibility. As a single designer, you can’t fix everything. But you always have the opportunity to make something more accessible than it otherwise would be if you don’t educate yourself or try at all.
2. About 40% of designers I speak to say “I don’t have a specific methodology I use”. In general, this is fine.

Except when it comes to research and problem framing. You don’t need a *single* approach or methodology, but you do need to be able to describe...

Here's a trap I always fall into (and I see others fall into).

Are you an:

A: Advocate for a certain meta-approach/process
vs.
B: Advocate/detractor for a specific idea

Without being careful, you can seem like B even if your focus/passion is A. This happens to #design...(1/3)
...a ton. Most #designers I know are passionate about the overall approach to design (A). Yet they juggle that with sometimes having a horse in the race (B) or people not believing in A.

The problem? It is easy to be pigeonholed as B. Or for B to be confused with A. This..(2/3)
So what is the answer?

You have to be extremely, extremely deliberate. Being B is not bad! You actually cloud that with juggling A and B. Being A is not bad either. But easily confused.

So communicate very deliberately and double-check understanding. (3/3)

:deep, fortifying breath:

(Because this thread is nervous-making for me to write.)

I want to talk cold, hard numbers about what #designers make, because it looks like there are some huge misconceptions floating around out there in the #knitting world.
There is currently a kerfuffle on IG, which has spilled over into Twitter, about the financial accessibility of yarn, because a knitter went to purchase the recommended yarn for the pattern she wanted to make and it was a ghastly high total.
Said knitter called for indie designers (in addition to all the other stuff the market currently expects them to load into their products) to recommend multiple yarns per pattern, customized to different price points, with photos of the finished project in each recommended yarn.

Last Saturday, @souvikdg and @hallidude chatted about the pros and cons of @CraftCMS on hasgeek.com/metarefresh/co…. If you are deciding on whether to adopt #CraftCMS, you will find this thread useful. (1/13)
@souvikdg @hallidude @CraftCMS .@CraftCMS is a general purpose Content Management System (CMS) which differentiates itself from other #alternatives by offering a clean starting point coupled with great tools to build a #website. (2/13)
@souvikdg @hallidude @CraftCMS .@CraftCMS features a clear separation of concern between the content models, presentation and business logic. Since you begin with a clean slate, you have to bring your own #HTML and #design. There is no starter theme.

Image

We’re all biased to use the tools we know

Which is good in one sense bc we know the tools.

But challenging...because it may not be the best approach/tool for the job.

We need to consciously counteract our bias to use the tools we know (1/3)
So #developers need to counteract their instinct to solve with building. And #designers to solve with design. And #marketers to solve with marketing. And #prodmgmt to solve with [for another tweet]. Etc.

People realize this in retrospect. Binging on @IndieHackers today... (2/3)
...to a “t”, technical founders mentioned that they wished they had resisted the instinct to build their way out of problems.

This episode was amazing as @arvidkahl and @SimpsonDaniK strike a great balance between research, discipline, and “building”.

Almost every day for the last month or so, I've pumped at work. Not in the basement pump room that's like a 10 minute walk to get to, or hiding out in the bathroom armchair, but AT WORK. In lab. On my microscope. At my desk. Around other humans. This is a #momlife thread 1/
I've pumped while taking care of fruit flies. While doing microdissections. While standing in the sandwich line at the cafeteria. Walking down the hallway. In the elevator. Walking home. ON THE EFFING SUBWAY. I even pumped in class a couple of times 2/
This is because @Freemie finally brought pumping into the twenty - first century with the #freemieliberty. There's a wearable technology for every sport under the sun, and now, finally, for pumping too. 3/
