Many of the arguments shorturl.at/kDNX5 are correct but @guardian should be careful not to exaggerate statements of scientists & misinform the public. #Thread
In particular it is questionable whether scientific data that are not publicly available and thus not verifiable should be communicated in newspaper and used to make moral and ethical judgements.
#Stem cells and #EmbryoModels offer tremendous potential for understanding how we come to be and can have a very significant impact on public health. As noted in this article, they can bring profound economic, social, and environmental benefits.

I'm going to start a thread of common writing tricks that you can (generally) use to help to reduce your word count in scientific writing. I'll add to the thread whenever I remember an example.
#wordcountchop

1. "On the other hand" (4) ➡️ "Conversely" (1)
2. "It has been shown that X regulates" Y (8) ➡️ "X regulates Y" (3)

I recommend only using the former option where there is a need to critical assess or compare the evidence, e.g. While it has been shown that ..., Y suggests that...

3. "In particular" (2) ➡️"Specifically" (1)

How precise are noisy #morphogen gradients in #tissue #patterning?

It turns out that the positional information they convey to #cells in the #neuraltube is much more accurate than previously estimated!

Our new #devbio paper is out in @NatureComms: rdcu.be/cH8Fx Image
A methodological subtlety has previously led to overestimated positional errors of the morphogen gradients in the mouse neural tube. We reanalysed the noisy gradients and found that the positional information they can convey to cells is actually orders of magnitude more precise. Image
Also, morphogen gradients in differently sized tissues must not be pooled and rescaled to their mean length, or else an artificial positional error is added. Image

Who am I if I’m not a #DevelopmentalBiologist? A (long) thread. Today for #BlackInDevelopmental, I would like to tell you how I got here. I am a #FirstGen college attendee and graduate. I was raised in a single-parent household. We struggled financially when I was growing up. 1/ Image
I know what hunger feels like and have had the lights turned off. I know what it’s like to have holes in the bottom of my shoes from wear. I know what it is to love science. I have been a scientist since childhood. Collecting snails, thinking about how the world works. 2/
In spite of my parents’ inability to help me with schoolwork, I always did really well in school. I actually liked going. Partially for the normalcy it provided, partially for socializing, but mostly because I was curious and I was good at it. 3/

As undergrad, I struggled immensely with this: reading and omg understanding papers.

Especially as non-native English speaker.

I did develop a system that helped me back then.

Bear with me it is pretty...mundane. 1/n

I printed each paper. And while reading I used a yellow, a green, and a pink highlighter.

When reading, I labeled every first mention of an abbreviation in green.

This helped me to find their meaning quickly again when deep into the text.

2/n
In pink, I labeled key questions and take-home messages.

If done correctly, you can look at pink sentences alone and recap the whole paper.

Peo-rip: first and last sentences of paragraphs often are pink sentences.

Pro-tip 2: write papers that have pink sentences.

This is every molecular biologist's nightmare - vector and PCR product contamination across samples.

We can sequence so deep now that all kinds of details come to light!
I bet lots of us "reproduced" aspects of this in our own labs - i.e. a genotyping you do often starts to show up in every PCR you do, etc.

DNA always finds a way.

To add two anecdotes.

A good friend during my PhD did mass spec on Drosophila samples, and couldn't figure out what the predominant recovered peptides were. They overpowered everything else.

Human Keratin.

He made sure to wear gloves after this. 1/2

We’re excited to share our newest publication @nature. With #scRNAseq we investigated 10 key #epigenetic regulators in #embryogenesis. Interesting early task for #Polycomb! Meissner lab @MPI_MolGen & @HSCRB /w @helenekretzmer & Zachary D. Smith (1/13) nature.com/articles/s4158…
What is normal in #devbio? First, we generated a single-cell reference of WT mouse #gastrulation and early organogenesis to which we later compared mutant phenotypes. We identified 42 embryonic and extraembryonic cell states and placed them in a lineage tree. (2/13) Image
Our WT reference is time-resolved covering #embryo stages E6.5-8.5. Variation is information: We pooled multiple embryos with unique SNP profiles per single-cell experiment; cell-to-embryo assignment is possible from scRNA data. (3/13) Image

Honored & grateful to receive the @ZDMSociety award in these trying times.

The award also recognizes our amazing international trainees using #zebrafish #devbio as cardiovascular disease model, first @UZH_en & now @CUAnschutz - and our fantastic collaborators!

Thx all🍾🐟!
Special shout-out to @FelkerAnastasia @karin_prummel @aburger2009, our collaborators @ClaudioCantu81 @d_zimmerli @KevinMMA13 @DanielaPanakova @PanakovaLab @George_Hausmann and all who were part of our BCL9 work cited in the award:

Happy our review on the lateral plate mesoderm is out @Dev_journal, with @karin_prummel & @Susan81643382 (open access).

Our first attempt at reviewing the fascinating, wacky, complex biology as Development at a Glance with poster!

The LPM forms several central cell fates and organ systems, including the heart, endothelium, blood, limb connective tissue, and much more.

This seemingly weird combo of downstream fates seems unrelated the adult body - but they all share a common LPM origin!
Our review now attempts to summarize how LPM's development (and possible evolution) ties these diverse downstream fates together.

We also discuss that not all "mesoderm" is equal:
the LPM forms as dedicated mesendoderm lineage early on, both in development and evolution.🧬🧬🧬

#BSDBGenSoc2020 These days we all have other things in our minds, it is difficult to concentrate and many of my thoughts R w/ family anf friends in #Spain) but discussing our work, is an important part of our being and it is going to be important in the weeks and months to come.
While many, all, of us rather do al this in person, we are going to have to adjust in the weeks to come. #BSDBGenSoc2020 is a good way to explore how we are going to do it so, THANKS @_BSDB_ and @the_Node for organizing and running this.
My Tweetorial follows the phenomenal one from @TimFulton_1 @SteventonLab (with whom @AMA_Lab work closely) this morning and is very related.

And now onto the tweetorial in the form of a loooong thread.

We’re proud to present our #preprint, where we induce embryo-like morphogenesis in #gastruloids, resulting in the generation of trunk-like-structures (#TLS) with #somites flanking the #neuraltube @MPI_MolGen w/ @adrianobolondi . A short summary (1/12) biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
#Gastruloids are a fantastic culture system, but lack proper morphogenesis, e.g. neural cells do not form a neural tube and presomitic mesoderm does not condense into somites. Can we induce proper embryo-like morphology by mechano-chemical manipulation? Yes, we can! (2/12)
Embedding 96h #gastruloids in 5% #matrigel resulted in trunk-like-structures, with somites flanking the neural tube. Activation of WNT signaling, either alone or in combination with BMP inhibition lead to hyper-epithelialized somites arranged as a bunch of grapes (3/12)

The articles come in two flavours, answering:
1. What has developmental biology every done for us?
2. What are the big open questions in the field?
Our new issue features one of each! 2/6
