1-Don’t get me wrong, I’m v pleased that @UKParliament are now taking #COVID seriously & doing SOME of the simple things we know ⬇️ transmission.

#Masks #SocialDistancing #WorkFromHome

Assuming everyone working on the estate is >18, the vast majority will be doubly vaccinated.
2-So tell me, why are pupils (largely unvaccinated), education staff & families of both not afforded such protections?
I searched the #DfE website HOPING for advice on 😷s, social distancing, options for CV/CEV pupils & staff to work/learn from home, ventilation?
@educationgovuk
3- But NOTHING, just👇🏼from @nadhimzahawi in the last few days re LFTs, NO MENTION of any other mitigations at all.

#COVIDVaccination has only just begun in the 12-15s, so what are CV/CEV pupils, staff & those with CV/CEV family members to do?

Maybe the @UKHSA can help….?

Hi again @JuliaHB1, I haven’t got time today to produce the very long list of ways in which you have played an active part in the relentless spread of #COVIDDisinformation, which has directly contributed to the catastrophic situation we are now in….
1/
…..But for now, would you be able to comment on the fact that you signed the letter from #UsforThemUK to @GavinWilliamson & #DfE requesting that 😷s be removed from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿secondary schools in the summer term.

usforthem.co.uk/open-letters/n…
2/
The push to remove 😷s from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿secondary schools during a pandemic has been disastrous, detrimental not only to pupils health & wellbeing (& that of their families) but to their education too.

You & your co-signatories are responsible for a lot of avoidable harm & suffering.

Now I’m getting really angry @GavinWilliamson @educationgovuk

This document isn’t t worth the paper/screen it’s written on!

Who advised you on this unscientific, dangerous nonsense?

@PHE_uk by any chance?
The same PHE that has failed HCPs on #PPE throughout the pandemic?
1/16
Just for a moment put the children, staff & families who’re being unnecessarily exposed to #COVID19 day after day in schools that are almost completely MITIGATION FREE.

Who’ll be caring for #COVID patients in the INEVITABLE, but AVOIDABLE surge that we’re at the start of?
2/
WHO Mr Williamson?

My HCP/NHS colleagues have for 18/12, & will continue to, put our lives, & those of our loved ones, at ⬆️risk to provide the care that patients w/ #COVID19 need across ALL healthcare settings & in their homes.

Day in day out!

The thread from April👇🏼 is especially relevant as 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿schools reopen w/ almost ZERO MITIGATIONs to ⬇️#coronavirus transmission/protect people.

Sept 1st 21 -“numbers” many English ppl have become immune to, a stark reminder of a @Conservatives brutal #LivingWithCovid “policy”.
1/16
Almost 36,000 new cases.
842 hospital admissions.
207 deaths.

That is roughly 37,000 individuals/families affected by #COVID, yesterday alone!
And potentially 3,600 more cases of #LongCovid to boot!

This is what #LivingWithCovid looks like folks!

@sajidjavid @JonAshworth
2/
And by pure coincidence this is what a lazy, ignorant, selfish, cruel & greedy “strategy” against a global pandemic looks like too.

It is NO ACCIDENT!

This is the purest form of #SurvivalOfTheFittest, a plan so grotesque I didn’t think it possible in modern Britain.

Mr Williamson, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to contain my horror at #DfE plans for the return to 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿schools this week.

Such insincere tweets are deeply offensive to anyone who’s been personally affected by serious acute #COVID, #LongCovid or been bereaved by it.
1/14
Suggesting schools “get back to a greater sense of normality…” during a pandemic of an #airborne 🦠reveals a marked lack of scientific understanding of the issues & is an utterly disingenuous way to present the situation to parents & children who deserve far better.
2/
And to those of us caring for patients to w/ #COVID19 whilst simultaneously trying to tackle the ever growing mountain of non-#COVID care (STILL in sub-optimal #PPE) it is a huge slap in the face.

I’m right behind you @Sandyboots2020👏

Just imagine what school improvements £37bn would’ve bought @BorisJohnson ?

Maybe there isn’t a #Tory MP or donor w/ an interest in #ventilation systems, #HEPA filters, CO2 monitors etc?

Is it just not lucrative enough @Conservatives?
1/8
I’m surprised none of the VIP #PPE contract beneficiaries didn’t spot an opportunity to make some extra cash supplying schools with FRSM😷s knowing #COVIDisAirborne ?

For those foolishly continuing to block out the truth of #COVID19UK, this👇🏼isn’t what “recovery” looks like.
2/
The ONLY CONCLUSION one can draw from #DfE advice is that UNMITIGATED #coronavirus TRANSMISSION in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿/🇬🇧schools IS THE PLAN for the 21/22 academic year!

The HUMAN collateral damage’s been “baked in”- lives lost, chronic debilitating illness, orphaned children…ALL AVOIDABLE.

Morning @GavinWilliamson @NickGibbUK & @halfon4harlowMP - if you could put the Latin books down for a mo, there are millions of teachers, parents & secondary school pupils who’d be very interested in some answers.
1/

@educationgovuk @CommonsEd @KateGreenSU @LaylaMoran @NEUnion
Sadly, I suspect you won’t have any!

My guess is that you neither know or care how opening 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿schools up in Sept WITHOUT ANY MITIGATIONS for an #Airborne 🦠will affect the HUMANS forced each day to study/work INSIDE the schools, especially those who’re unvaccinated or CV/CEV.
2/
But as a Dr could I ask..

1)How many children w/ CHRONIC DEBILITATING SYMPTOMS will worry you?

2)How many VERY SICK children is too many?

3)How many SICK STAFF will stop schools functioning?

4)How you will know the number of CV/CEV children who’ve been vaccinated by Sept?

What hope is there for the health & safety of school children in🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 when the chair of @CommonsEd continues to promote & support the views of @UsforThemUK & @lensiseethrough which are ANTI-#COVID MITIGATION on every level!
1/14🧵
Whilst @educationgovuk policy on #COVID19 mitigations in schools is so heavily influenced by this group, & others, there is little chance of any tangible change before 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿schools reopen in September.

16 months in to the pandemic, children here are FAR LESS PROTECTED, not more!
2/
Does @halfon4harlowMP realise that school children are being unnecessarily exposed to #coronavirus as part of the government’s #HerdImmunityByInfection “strategy” which has been internationally condemned as an unscientific & barbaric way to proceed?

1/9 Dear @adilray, you & @susannareid100 are 2 of few presenters prepared fo challenge government rhetoric.

Can you ask @MattHancock why, in the face of ⬆️cases & hospitalisations of the #DeltaVariant, schools have virtually no mitigations to ⬇️transmission of an #airborne🦠?
2/ Children account for a significant proportion of ⬆️cases (10,000+ today) & can transmit #COVID19 to their families.

A worrying number of children have got #LongCovid (maybe 10%) & campaigners are trying to prevent them being vaccinated.
CV/CEV kids are a particular concern.
3/ There are several weeks of term left & ⬆️numbers of schools have outbreaks, risking not only the health of pupils, staff & families but also MORE EDUCATIONAL DISRUPTION.

WHY are the lives of CHILDREN being dismissed so callously?

WHY is NOTHING being done to protect them?

1/11 Just for 1 minute, put acute #COVID & #LongCovid to one side.

How exactly do those in the #DfE, #UsForThem, #CRG & the #HartGroup intend to protect children from more educational disruption w/ a highly contagious virus whirling its way through schools across the UK?

How?
2/The ongoing educational damage done by CHOOSING NOT to adequately & effectively mitigate for an #airborne virus w/in UK schools (English esp) was completely avoidable.

IT WAS (& CONTINUES TO BE) A CHOICE, sanctioned by Gvmt AND a mostly complicit media.
3/ Our political leaders chose to follow a THEORETICAL #HerdImmunity “strategy” with a novel virus which RELIED ON unmitigated spread within young, fit parts of society & FACTORED IN that sadly some of those would also become seriously ill or die.

1/ Where is @GavinWilliamson?

Whatever your opinion of #DominicCummings his testimony FITS with what’s happened on the ground in our #COVID19UK experience.

Little mention of schools but school children, families & staff are STILL NOT BEING PROTECTED ADEQUATELY...NOW...TODAY!
2/ School-age children, many parents & young staff are
UNVACCINATED against an #Airborne 🦠.

HOW MUCH LONGER must we wait for @GavinWilliamson @educationgovuk @NickGibbUK & @halfon4harlowMP UNDERSTAND BASIC SCIENCE?

1) Y’day I saw a patient who wanted this story told.

The 40+ yr old X was diagnosed w/ #Covid19 on 24th Dec.
X’s teenage daughter was sent home from school to isolate during the last week of term after a friend developed #Covid.
X was previously fit & well, on no medication.
2) X spent 2 weeks in January in hospital, followed by a month in bed at home.
By March X started to improve a bit but due to overwhelming symptoms of breathlessness on exertion, fatigue & “brain fog” was able to do very little.
3) X could not work & a referral to the #LongCovid clinic followed.

Over recent days X became more breathless & incapacitated which eventually resulted in hospital admission.

I’m particularly upset today that teaching & nursery staff haven’t been prioritised for vaccination.
I really don’t care what stats have been thrown at us claiming they’re not at ⬆️ risk of serious #COVID19 outcomes as a group.
They’ve been treated with utter contempt! 1/7
We expect them to teach & care for our children, our most precious family members.

And we expect them to do it WITHOUT #PPE in conditions most of us would run away from - crowded, poorly ventilated rooms, mixing w/ MULTIPLE households every day.
2/
Imagine expecting high rise window cleaners to work without safety ropes.
Imagine builders being told “sorry chaps, no hard hats or steel capped boots today”.

One of the most bizarre & troubling bits of the #ReopeningSchools saga is that @educationgovuk & @BorisJohnson have ignored every single plea from teachers, early years staff, pupils & their families to #MakeSchoolsSafe & wasted all the months they have had to do so. 1/14 🧵
2)They’ve turned their backs on plentiful advice from #SAGE, @IndependentSage & @NEU.
Even @CMO_England has made his reservations as clear as he can from a rather difficult position.
But they’ve put their collective fingers in their ears & metaphorically said “La La La La”!
3) @GavinWilliamson & @halfon4harlowMP CLAIM the motivation for a speedy full opening of all school & early years facilities is the WELFARE OF CHILDREN!
They repeatedly cite educational, emotional, social & psychological needs.

This is plea to all Headteachers regarding the imminent full opening of UK schools.

If we remove from the debate HOW MUCH children transmit/spread #coronavirus WITHIN schools, we all accept that they do spread it to a greater or lesser degree.
Fact!
1/8🧵
Children do not exist in isolation!
Every day they mix with their families & friends & during the school day they mix with many teachers & staff.
Fact!

So the word BUBBLE in the school context is UTTER NONSENSE! 2/
The government & #DfE have rejected virtually every mitigation proposed by #SAGE, @IndependentSage & @neu & we’re told the @CMO_England is v uneasy about a BIG BANG reopening.

You don’t have to be a scientist or medic to understand this re risk in various settings👇🏼.

I’m sorry @halfon4harlowMP, but this is outdated & untrue!
Dr Harries: “It is very much a closed community.”
You’re expecting us to believe that #schools are CLOSED COMMUNITIES?!
YEAR BUBBLES + staff & families
To describe them as CLOSED COMMUNITIES is complete fantasy! 1/ 7
I don’t know what the reasons are for REFUSING to accept that educational/ early years staff aren’t at INCREASED RISK, but this is also NOT TRUE! As a healthcare professional I find it deeply disturbing that #DfE aren’t prepared to make simple changes to protect so many lives.2/
#COVID19 is a serious multi-system disease.
Even those with mild symptoms can develop #LongCovid & a significant number of those discharged from hospital die in the next few months. Young, fit ppl are suffering & dying.
And #KidsGetLongCovid too! 3/

IMO #teachers & #earlyyears staff settings are being SACRIFICED to give an illusion of “SAFETY”. The Gvmt know that if the majority of parents realise these settings are the places where they are likely to catch #coronavirus from, many will not want to their kids to go. 1/9
They’re keen to perpetuate the belief that there is “nothing to see here” in order to keep the work force working.
I’m not naive, I know the economic fallout from more things locking down won’t be good. But w/ so many children in school #Lockdown3 will go on for longer. 2/
Think #Chernobyl.
The men on the roof. Sacrificed to show the world that those in charge knew what they were doing. This is the same.
How many teachers have had #COVID19 ? How many have died? The full stats remain illusive. They are our family, friends & community members. 3/

NO ONE is accusing parents of being selfish!
BUT the situation in the UK is DESPERATELY SERIOUS!
The more kids in school & nurseries, the more healthcare workers will get ill or need to isolate due to #Covid impacting on #NHS staff levels. 1/5
AND the more vulnerable kids take #COVID19 home to families who’re already at increased risk of serious #Covid ,will result in higher demand for Critical Care/ITU beds & stop other care.
#Dfe need to urgently change the access for parents from “key” to “ESSENTIAL” workers. 2/
No one is suggesting it is easy. I can see how hard it must be to supervise #remotelearning & work from home.
But IF you can manage your kids at home even for a couple of weeks it would make a big difference to this crisis, which is rapidly becoming a catastrophe!
Really! 3/

My stance and thread on June 1st #schoolsreopening just so the #dfe don't bully you with blind Science... I think the way #DominicCummnings was treated totally different to anyone else sums up the real lack of trust from the #government from Parents and teachers alike. 1/3
We wanted to start with Y6 on June 1st in bubbles BUT only 9/46 wanted the kids to return. Sadly this is not possible now as only 50% of the #PPE order has arrived. Im not opening my school (other than #Keyworkers / #vulnerables) until I can guarantee staff and children's safety

To all schools giving unrealistic timetables for children to do at home-PLEASE STOP. By all means offer work for those who wish to do but to expect children to do it under duress is wrong. There is NO #DFE expectations for this and children IN SCHOOL are off timetable #coronavirus
2. Imagine being a parent of 4kids in different YG's whilst 'working from home?' -Parents are NOT teachers. Parents should be ensuring their children are happy and their wellbeing is protected. I would use @HeyPobble 'fun' homework OR use the brilliant example from @LeedsEastWay
3. @LeedsEastWay sent the most brilliant letter - offering work BUT not being punished for not doing it. We have to remember NOT all households have x4 different appliances to work on - and phones 'data' will soon run out. These are unique times. Take the pressure off the teachers
