1/6 Pablo Sánchez, a 40 year old from Venezuela, died in ICE Custody last Friday, October, 1st. Pablo had AIDS and fled persecution seeking asylum in the US for his safety and health. Pablo was detained by CBP at Del Río City, Texas Image
2/6 Pablo was forced into detention where his health quickly deteriorated due to medical neglect. ICE was fully aware of Pablo’s medical fragility and failed to release him so that he could obtain life-saving interventions.
3/6 Pablo died because ICE was reckless and negligent and the lack of appropriate medical care resulted in complications with acute respiratory impairment, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, pneumonia, acute renal failure, anemia and covid-19.

There’s a long history of counties and private prison corporations entering contracts with ICE to lock up New Yorkers who are trying to fix their civil immigration status. Today, several counties in NYS have active contracts renting jail beds to ICE:

1. #DignityNotDetention prohibits NY State government from entering into immigration detention contracts & prohibits them from receiving any payments related to immigration detention.

Answer: Since it opened in 1993, but then it was operated by Esmor. INS found that guards treated people with "capricious cruelty". While the operators have changed, it's still a miserable place that needs to be closed. #ICEOutOfNJ #FreeThemAll #DignityNotDetention
One of the women who was held at the Elizabeth Detention Center in those early years was Fauziya Kassindja who fled her country of Togo to escape a forced marriage and female genital mutilation. She came to the US seeking asylum but was jailed instead. pbs.org/speaktruthtopo…
Fauziya and the 60 other women who were detained there were strip searched and forced to shower within sight of male guards. They were placed in solitary for minor infractions and sometimes chained and shackled.
