2/ The introduction by Chad Denton & Heike Weber places the history of waste & recycling into an international context. It argues that we need to rethink waste's role in #bizhist & the role of salvage and reverse logistics in the history of #WW2 #SWW

3/ In "Nazi German waste recovery and the vision of a circular economy" Weber explores the waste economy inside the Nazi state & shows how waste reclamation was an integral part of Nazi ideological and racial worldviews.

Imagine a near future in which the fictional University of #Leonia announces a degree program in #DiscardStudies. In doing so, they help to establish this emerging field with a full #curriculum, dedicated faculty, and eager student population. 1/10 @DiscardStudies | #Discard2020 Image
At U of L, teaching discard studies is about more than talking #trash. This new program’s core trains students to use #SystemsThinking to critique #power as the structural force that renders material, people, and land as #waste in a globalized #ColonialCapitalist society. 2/10 Image
Treating objects and organisms as "#disposable" has consequences, but the root of this #WickedProblem runs deep below the surface. Traditional disciplines are insufficient for studying waste bc they focus on the details and fail to recognize the full picture (Brown, 2010). 3/10

Since I KonMari’d my room yesterday I reflected on the role of emotions in hoarding behaviour and how it is an easy narrative to say that people are hoarders because of their emotional attachment. There’s some work in #DiscardStudies on upcycling and recycling but...
I think we need to have a deeper rethink of waste production and the role of emotions.

Yesterday, I dumped ALL my cassette tapes.

All of them.

The ones I had since grade school, all the way to when I met my first boyfriend (and the ones I recorded for him too!)
Governing discards also means understanding how we govern ourselves.

I am assiduous about organizing and cleaning, and I hate clutter (the mark of a true #DiscardsStudies scholar or simply a Type A Virgo Upholder?) ... and yet,

I had tapes. I kept my grades from undergrad.

So many wonderful pieces on time capsules were companions while writing about the Westinghouse time capsules for @aeonmag -- wanted to share them here, beginning w/ @MatthewBattles piece, also for Aeon, The Ache for Immortality [next]
Here, @MatthewBattles describes time capsules as "a compound of the Quixotic and Ozymandian" -- and also lays out the fascination w/ the "message in the bottle" when often it is the bottle that is the message:
