We should not only make research more accessible because it is the right thing to do, but because it provides more accurate results.

I am so very proud and grateful to be amongst a group of fierce disabled academics and allies (@StevenArisz @noah_littel, Maurits, Eline and others). Together we are building a safe, intersectional, interuniversity platform for disabled folk. šŸ™Œ
If I am to have one academic legacy, let it be my modest contribution to this. Because we need this so bad.

I've been extremely fortunate to have had all my accommodation needs met in my undergrad studies, my master's, & now my doctoral studies.

ā€‹At all 3 universities, connecting with the accessibility office was easy, although getting the required paperwork did take time & money 2/
I'm fortunate to be supported by an amazing partner who has job security; so, I've been able to afford all the paperwork. All of my professors, except for one, have easily accepted my accommodations. 3/

So I (@theADHDacademic) did a thing and made a website. It might be useful, it might very well not be. It's #ADHD centered, but I talk about accommodations and I've got more posts planned on #UDL and inclusion. My point is, if I've said anything helpful, it might be helpful too?
I cover things like how to register with the disability office: theadhdacademic.weebly.com/advice-as-a-leā€¦
and how to talk to a professor who has denied your accommodation: theadhdacademic.weebly.com/advice-as-a-leā€¦

Let's crowdsource! What are some ways faculty, your dean, department chair, HR, or whoever else has supposedly granted an accommodation

without actually granting an accommodation?

Supposed accommodation: Yes, you can work remotely!
Reality: We need 2 months notice.
I can definitely think of a few from experience and what I often hear.

Supposed accommodation: Yes, you can work remotely!
Reality: You (and only you) need to give a detailed schedule of when you're on campus and you absolutely must adhere to it.
Supposed accommodation: Yes, you can attend part-time!

Reality: All of your funding depends on being full-time. You're not full time? Well then you're not funded.

When we hear someone's rights have been violated, it's natural to want to help. Before you give advice, please refer to this infographic. Image description was too long so it follows.

#DisInHigherEd #AcademicAbleism #DEHEM21 #HigherEdLovesToViolateADA #HigherEd Too long for Twitter apparently. Alt text is posted after in
Infographic. At the top is a stop sign and large text that reads, ā€œBefore you give advice about denied accommodationsā€¦ā€ Then there is a dividing line. Text reads, ā€œAre you recommending suing?ā€ and there are the following sentences, ā€œUnless you are offering to pay for
legal advice and cover all legal expenses or offer your services as a disability lawyer pro-bono, stop. Unless you know a lawyer or a law firm willing to take on a university or college, stop. Many professors, departments, and institutions will violate a disabled personā€™s rights

This thread is about to be a massive disclaimer. I am going to use today to speak as if I were speaking to friends, which means I am going to be completely honest, but it also means some of the advice I am going to give really, really sucks. (1/)
No one, not a student, not a professor, not a post-doc, should be forced to advocate for themselves and their accommodations. Is it a useful skill? Absolutely. It should not be a necessity, and it often is. There are a range of experiences to be had in #HigherEd. (2/)
Some people are wonderful and some offices and departments and folks in power are truly doing their best, trying to help disabled people, and working on their ableism. They're life-savers in my opinion. (3/)

It's hard to know where to start. I've spent the last decade feeling like I've been walking a tightrope, while people are constantly trying to push me off. If I don't just bear with it & instead push back, it increases. Now that I've long COVID, I think they'll finally succeed 2/
It's been a weird journey. I am Autistic, have ADHD, and POTS, as well as a few other things. I'm also the first in my family to go to college. I love working with data and helping people figure out how to use it best to solve their research problems. 3/

I'm a grad student who didn't get diagnosed with my disabilities until fairly recently, and I did so under extreme duress - it was either that and have a legal right to dubious support, or be forced out of my program. 2/
I have ADHD, I'm autistic, and I have joint hypermobility issues which mean I get injured a lot in the course of my work (long field work seasons are rough on both my physical and mental health). 3/

I was diagnosed with autism in my undergrad career. It was wonderful to be able to understand myself and my needs and do so in a place where I felt safe. But I was sheltered in undergrad, fortunate enough to have a professor open about being ND. 2/
I connected with them more than other students did, not realizing why other students didnā€™t. And now I continue my journey in higher ed, facing extreme ableism from my PI. I want to make it clear that my PI is a genuinely good person, but is incapable of seeing ableism. 3/

Close to the end of my program, my health was getting much worse with no clarity as to why. I found myself struggling in school, so I visited a faculty counselor to help me try to get through the last chunk of my program and graduate as smoothly and quickly as possible. 2/
Part of these visits was explaining why I was having difficulty, and that my experiences had led to me being disillusioned with the program.

1/ Thread: This thread will discuss my journey into mental health, disability, and DEI advocacy in higher academia: it started because struggling with my mental illnesses as a Latina in a STEM degree felt alienating.
2/ Per my last thread: many marginalized folks involved with advocacy in academia speak out and do extra work because of traumatic experiences. For me, I needed an outlet. I pursued self-advocacy and advocacy to stay in my field and higher education.
3/ I also speak out to normalize mental illness and bringing awareness that disabled people deserve a seat at the table with DEI initiatives. Higher education was not built with mental health and disability in mind.

Discussion: How can Allies Tackle Their Ableism!
Hello to allies in the community! You may be wondering how you can participate in #DEHEM21 & support disabled students, staff, faculty, colleagues, and individuals in the community. 1 thing you can do is tackle your ableism (1/31) Two toned light and medium blue graphic with grey-blue, navy
Ableism is the discrimination & social prejudice against disabled people. Everyone can experience ableism, but it is most prevalent for disabled individuals. It can be both explicit or implicit. What can you do to tackle your ableism? (2/31)
Here are some Donā€™ts for Disability as an Ally: 1) Donā€™t use disability as a punchline or to mock people with disabilities. Often, people use disability in jokes or use ableist language to describe others. This language harms disabled people & the disabled experience. (3/31)

I've been thinking about this a lot tonight. So, as someone who is autistic, ADHD, & generally neurodivergent/neurodiverse, I heavily struggle with executive functioning. Executive dysfunctioning might be my biggest barrier in life šŸ§µ#DEHEM21 #DisInHigherEd
