But tech *does* steal from news. A variety of monopolistic tricks allows tech to interpose itself between reporters, publishers and outlets, and the audiences they serve. By creating chokepoints between the news and its audience, tech can extract gigantic sums from the news.

We elevated youth activists and organizations like @logoffmovement by sharing the lived experiences of young people navigating Big Tech’s harms. We hosted a youth roundtable with @SenBlumenthal and partnered with young diverse digital creators to spread our campaigns online.
Last week, @markgurman published a blockbuster story in @Business, revealing #Apple's plan to allow third-party #Ios #AppStores to comply with the #EU's #DigitalMarketsAct. @Apple didn't confirm it, but I believe it. Gurman's sourcing was impeccable:

First of all, check out the list of Core Platform Services that may pull a business into the gatekeeper class (Art 2). Notably including web browsers, virtual assistants, & *online advertising services*, e.g. Exchanges, as long as they are provided by a business offering a CPS 2/
Elsewhere in EU regulatory pipe-dreams authored by people who apparently have more good intention than understanding, the #DMA means that @WhatsApp and @signalapp should both adopt #XMPP and thereby deliver a unified "inbox" of messages.

When I first encountered the idea of disappearing messages, I thought they were stupid, but I was wrong. I thought that the point of disappearing messages was to let you send secrets to someone you didn't trust, because the message would disappear and thus be safe. 2/
Obviously, this is stupid. If you send a secret to someone you don't trust, that untrustworthy person can take a screenshot, or use another device to photograph their screen. Or, you know, they can just *remember* the secret and blab it. 3/

First, a general lesson on legal regulation. Law is not magic. Just because a law seems to require something (e.g. because it expressly says it does), it doesn't mean
(1) this thing will actually happen and
(2) the law actually requires it.

Splošni pristop glede zakonodajnega predloga Akta o digitalnih storitvah (#DSA), ki so ga minuli teden sprejeli ministri za gospodarstvo na zasedanju Sveta za konkurenčnost (@EUCouncil | #COMPET), odraža neambicioznost članic EU pri zaščiti pravic evropskih državljanov na spletu.
Oba zakonodajna dokumenta, poleg #DSA še Akt o digitalnih trgih (#DMA), sta pomembna za enotni digitalni trg. Čeprav splošni pristop, ki ga je sprejel @EUCouncil, predstavlja določen napredek, pa še zdaleč ne zagotavlja ustrezne ravni varstva evropskih državljanov in potrošnikov.
Pripravo splošnega pristopa zaključuje tudi Odbor Evropskega parlamenta za notranji trg in varstvo potrošnikov (@EP_SingleMarket | #IMCO). S tem bo tlakovana pot, da Svet EU (@EUCouncil) in Evropski parlament (@Europarl_EN) prihodnje leto pripravita končno besedilo #DSA.
Erster Eindruck: Ampel hat keinen Bock auf #Urheberrecht. Nur Evaluierung, keine Gesetzesvorhaben im #Koalitionsvertrag, dabei bräuchten wir die dringend, zB beim #Zensurheberrecht. Ob Bibliotheken E-Books künftig wie physische Bücher verleihen dürfen, bleibt unklar. #BuchistBuch
Etwas besser ist der Abschnitt zu Forschung, wissenschaftsfreundliches #Urheberrecht klingt gut, aber es fehlen Details. Ich würde mir da zB wünschen: Ausweitung des Zweitveröffentlichungsrechts für Urheber*innen aller wissenschaftl Publikationen, unabhängig vom Finanzierungsweg!
Der medienpolitische Teil zu #DSA/#DMA liest sich schlimmstenfalls als Unterstützung der Idee, dass Plattformen nicht nur #Leistungsschutzrecht für Presseartikel zahlen sollen, sondern auch gezwungen werden, diese anzuzeigen. Das behindert Vorgehen gegen Desinformation! #LSR
