This op-ed by @HaesJulia and @klamuh in @TspWissenschaft downplays the hard authoritarian turn under Xi Jinping. Their policy advise for πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ-πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³ academic cooperation would have been adequate during the early years of the Hu era. But a return to the status quo ante is unlikely /1
The end of China's reform and opening up period (1978-2012) & the rise of the security state under Xi Jinping (2012-) does not feature. Instead the two authors complain about the growing emphasis on 'systemic rivalry' in πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ-πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³ relations (key words highlighted by me in yellow) /2
Instead the authors bemoan that 'after 50 years of successful cooperation, mutual distrust has thus replaced a belief in the common benefits of scientific collaboration (author's translation).' The culprits are supposedly 'isolationism', 'nationalism', and 'deglobalisation' /3

In today's @china_table Berthold Kuhn has published a very problematic response to my rebuttal of @ESandschneider op-ed. Instead of defending #academicfreedom against CCP censorship Kuhn criticises @merics_eu supposedly 'confrontational China attitude' /1 table.media/china/2021/04/…
Whereas in March 2021 European Research Institute Directors roundly denounced the CCP's sanctions against @merics_eu Berthold Kuhn suggests that 'young scientists and business experts in particular are more likely to refrain from working with Merics' /2 statement-china-sanctions.vercel.app
While I welcome robust public debates about the logic & limits of Magnitsky sanctions I am dismayed that Berthold Kuhn's discussion of the Chinese Communist Party's sanctions against @merics_eu isn't prefaced with an unequivocal defence of #AcademicFreedom and #FreedomOfSpeech /3

Former German Chancellor Gerhard 'Gazprom' Schroeder has done it again. In a new German-language op-ed for @handelsblatt he argues against a value-based European China policy. What follows is a critique of his simplistic analysis of EU-China relations /1

handelsblatt.com/meinung/gastbe…
He frames EU-China relations in opposition to the geopolitical rivalry between the US and China, which he likens to a new Cold War.

Schroeder argues for multipolarity, European sovereignty & demands that in future reforms EU member states renounce further sovereignty rights /2
When it comes to China he briefly mentions that Beijing has smashed Hong Kong's democracy movement and that religious and ethnic groups are being suppressed. He also recognises the expansionism in the South China Sea. Schroeder calls all of the above a 'controlled offensive' /3
