According to ancient tradition, Jammu Rajya had a small beginning when Agnigir(also written Agnivaran) the younger son of King Sudarshan(who was 20th in decent in the line of Lord Rama of Ayodhya) migrated from Ayodhya to Shivalik Hills and reached the bank of river Ravi.
He ruled there for long time. His son Vayu-Sharab extended his rule upto Ujh. Next in his line imp. ruler was Agnigarbh. He was very ambitious. He had 8 sons named: Bahu Lochan, Jambu Lochan, Arun Lochan, Kos Lochan, Ram Lochan, Hem Lochan Rupa Lochan and Surg Lochan.
With the help of his sons he extended his rule upto the Tawi. BahuLochan succeeded him. He was killed in a fight with Punjab's ruler.Jambu Lochan became next ruler and avenged his death. Now, some say Jammu name is derived from his name. But there are many other theories also.

It was not as if this was done on Royal Orders. People did so because they wanted to celebrate this Festival.
