15 MINUTE CITIES

I spoke in Parliament today to ask the Government to hold a debate on the international socialist concept of so called 15 minute cities and 20 minute neighbourhoods.

Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ) in their present format do untold economic damage to any city. However the second step after ULEZ is this so called 15 minute cities or 20 minute neighbourhoods.

These will take away your personal freedoms as well. Bristol, Oxford, Canterbury are signed up for them as is now @SheffCouncil. See their minutes of 2 February 2022. ➡️ democracy.sheffield.gov.uk/mgAi.aspx?ID=2…

NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK

I did an apprenticeship. I have also employed many apprentices over my working life and it’s a joy seeing their skills progress and watching them progress as individuals too.

🧵1/4 #Doncasterisgreat #stronglocaleconomy #education
I’m doing all I can to promote apprenticeships and I am lobbying those in Government when I can.

🧵2/4 #Doncasterisgreat #stronglocaleconomy #education
This week I met with @GillianKeegan the Secretary of State for Education to press the case for apprenticeships. Being on the @CommonsEd has enabled me to raise questions of her before.

Cancer affects us all. In particular breast cancer affects far too many women. Please check yourself for anything unusual and if you’re worried then seek advice from @BreastCancerNow and your GP. 🧵2/4

SMALL BOATS

I am meeting the Home Secretary @SuellaBraverman this evening. I have made it very clear that I fully support the Government in using the full extent of the law to stop these small boats. 🧵1/6

#StopTheSmallBoats #Doncasterisgreat #controlledimmigration
I can assure you that my Conservative colleagues have the same view as me on this. It is unacceptable for economic migrants to jump the queue and then claim asylum and be fed and housed whilst their claims are investigated. 🧵2/6

#StopTheSmallBoats #controlledimmigration
They could have claimed asylum in France. That is not a war zone. It is a perfectly safe country to be in. 🧵3/6

UCAS & APPRENTICESHIPS

Today, the Government is launching plans to allow young people to use @ucas_online to search and apply for apprenticeships alongside degrees.

🧵1/6 #Doncasterisgreat #stronglocaleconomy #apprenticeshipweek Image
This will give them a better understanding of all the options available to them so they can get the best possible start in life.

I’m really pleased as apprenticeships are something I feel are not used enough.

🧵 2/6 #Doncasterisgreat #stronglocaleconomy #apprenticeshipweek Image
Both my son and I served apprenticeships and gained so much from the experience. New skills. Salary. No debt. A real launchpad to get ahead in life.

AIRPORT CLOSURE - DAY 108

My day started with preparation for the weekly zoom meeting for all MPs hosted by @olivercoppard . It’s held at 10 am on a Friday to brief all MPs as to latest developments on @DSA_Airport & @PeelLandP .

🧵 1/18 #SaveDSA #Doncasterisgreat
It’s an opportunity to ask questions re @DSA_Airport and to probe to try to find out what’s going on. The meeting started shortly after 10 and was stopped shortly after 11. Some people had other commitments so couldn’t stay past 10.30 am.

🧵 2/18 #SaveDSA #Doncasterisgreat
I wanted to know why @MayorRos had said the bid out to @PeelLandP was credible and why Peel said it wasn’t. There was a detailed explanation given by the CEO of @MyDoncaster about it.

I have just come off a Zoom meeting about @DSA_Airport .

@PeelLandP have received a bid and @MayorRos says it is a credible offer. Peel on the other had put out a press release to @BBCLookNorth saying they have had no credible bids.

🧵 1/4 #SaveDSA #Doncasterisgreat
I have now been given further information about this bid to @PeelLandP. On the basis of what I have been told this morning, this bid is absolutely credible.

I have been in touch with both the Secretary of State for Transport @Mark_J_Harper and the Aviation Minister and made that crystal clear to them.

AIRPORT CRISIS - DAY 59

Being back in Parliament has been really helpful in our campaign to Keep @DSA_Airport open. This is a long post but one with reason for real hope and optimism.

🧵 #SaveDSA #Doncasterisgreat 1/12
It’s given me the opportunity to meet again with the Aviation Minister @robertcourts and discuss the situation with him. I’ve been hoping that Robert is not moved in any reshuffle and to date it looks that he will remain in post.

🧵 #SaveDSA #Doncasterisgreat 2/12
.@robertcourts has been really helpful to date & has really impressed me with his attention to detail and his motivation to work with @olivercoppard to keep @DSA_Airport open.

On Wednesday it was PMQs and I was able to speak in the Chamber.

AIRPORT CRISIS - DAY 57

It’s been a whirlwind day here in Parliament. We have a new PM now the Queen has invited @trussliz to form a government. A cabinet reshuffle is taking place.

🧵 #SaveDSA #Doncasterisgreat 1/14
My job in Parliament is to promote Doncaster so I have made it my mission to get to know as many MPs as I can. So I’m confident that our City & @DSA_Airport is known to every Cabinet appointee.

🧵 #SaveDSA #Doncasterisgreat 2/14
This is particularly helpful in times of need. @DSA_Airport is in that category. I have written to our new PM on that front.

I have asked her to meet with or write to @olivercoppard to remind him he has devolved powers and he can and should use them to save DSA

@TUI are happy to operate from @DSA_Airport which is as busy as ever taking flights from other airports that cannot cope.
