Last March, Michele and dozens of others gathered at the Mississippi River in Grand Rapids, MN to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the largest oil spill in US history from the old Line 3.

Two weeks ago, Michele represented herself in a bench trial for a public nuisance charge with more than 30 supporters in the courtroom. This week, she was found not guilty!
We stand with water protectors fighting the Line 3 pipeline, many of whom have been criminalized for their role in the movement. Today we're uplifting the words of Alisha from the so-called American Midwest, who's facing felony and misdemeanor charges.

"Cops in Minnesota tortured me while I was protesting Line 3. The torture method the officers used is called “pain compliance” and is nothing but brutalization at the hands of the state to try to stop protestors from continuing to exercise their rights."
"The state of MN charged me with felony theft, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. The greed, corruption, and destruction present in the fossil fuel industry seems unfathomable on the daily but it is very much a reality, and one I will continue to fight."

"Defending the water and Mother Earth is neither criminal nor violent. I got involved in the movement to stop Line 3, because I am of the Bitterwater clan in my community, it is my obligation as a Tódích'íí'nii clan member to protect and defend my relatives, such as the Water."
"These charges make life more difficult than it already is. There already is a target on me as I am Indigenous, two spirit and a water protector wherever I go. I'm going to court to get my cases dismissed. Defending the water and Mother Earth is neither criminal nor violent."

"I knew that keeping the pipes out of the ground meant more to me than any other action I could take. When construction began, friends and loved ones began taking action up north, I joined them in February and was arrested and held for 72 hours in Beltrami County Jail in April."
"During my arrest I was forced into an ambulance I did not need where I sat handcuffed for 20 minutes before being transferred back to the sheriff's vehicle and brought to jail. My comrades and I received $500 bills from the ambulance company."
