ADL: A pro-Israel lobby with a civil rights hobby.
Incredibly important piece by @nkulw for @Jewishcurrents.
Noah Kulwin at Jewish Currents reports what activists have been sounding the alarm on for years: the ADL is not a friend to any progressive movement, including the fight against antisemitism. And all of this directly harms the movement for Palestinian liberation.
In fact, the main priority of the ADL isn’t anyone’s safety. It’s defending apartheid Israel at any cost.

When ADL shreds Constitution to ban criticism of Israel, it impacts all free speech for all of our rights.

Now ADL is going to shred the already minuscule corporate accountability there is, to protect Israeli crimes, which will loosen all human rights rules against investments.
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investing sets out the most basic human rights restrictions for investors, allowing them to hold corporations accountable. Based on these standards, which are already very low, large portfolios skip certain investments in violation.
Because some ESG advised investors have opted out of some Israeli businesses, or dared to ask questions, a group called JLENS (named after spy aircraft) began to lobby against ESG standards, lowering human rights protections across the world in order to protect Israel apartheid.

We Jews + all must confront antisemitism always. But ADL made millions going after Black electeds and activists, largely ignoring anti-Black and other defamation in service of anti-Black and anti-Palestinian apartheid. That does not help but contribute to division and mistrust. Image
ADL wants to tear up the US Constitution in service of protecting Israeli apartheid by deeming those who criticize just one nation state, automatic antisemites.

That will contribute to antisemitism.
ADL wants Amazon to decide what is antisemitic, without mention of what's homophobic, anti-Black, Islamophobic and no discussion of WHO decides what is hate speech, except them. They who decide what hate is often only in service to themselves

That'll contribute to antisemitism.

BREAKING–Leaked memo shows the ADL tried to evade criticism that it's not an ally by briefly pausing its US-Israel police exchanges—not out of concern for enabling state violence, but because of "bad optics" during George Floyd protests. Memo: bit.ly/ADLmemo

The leaked memo confirms it: The ADL deceptively portrays itself as an antiracist ally even as it works *against* our movements. The ADL literally strategizes how not to look like the racist, white-led, pro-police/pro-military org that it is. #DropTheADL
The #ADLleak memo is just the surface. Under pressure from our movements, the ADL has scrubbed Islamophobic & anti-BLM messaging from its websites—but it keeps pursuing Islamophobic & anti-Black policy that smears and vilifies many antiracist movements. #DropTheADL

This Monday, celebrate and escalate our disruption of the Anti-Defamation League's US-Israel police exchanges at our virtual rally!

We will PERMANENTLY end the ADL's program as well as all US law enforcement training in Israel.

Join us to find out how! jvp.org/dxrally
We — a Black, Palestinian, and Jewish coalition — disrupted @adl’s US-Israel police exchanges.

We're fighting for a world where we create safety through solidarity, not racist, militarized police using tactics honed by an occupying apartheid state.

And when we fight, we win.
As yesterday's leaked memo reveals, @adl "paused" its US-Israel police exchanges after our campaign made the programs too costly and controversial to continue.

We forced @adl to admit that, by training in Israel, US police might be further militarized and likelier to use force.

To build a safer world for all, we must permanently end all US-Israel police exchanges — as well as demilitarize, defund, and abolish police and end Israeli occupation and apartheid.

Our successful pressure on @ADL, the leading funder of police exchanges, is a key first step.
The budget and reputation crisis our Deadly Exchange campaign created for @ADL testifies to the power of solidarity across struggles and communities, and of a vision of safety that includes us all.

Organizing and coalition-building WORKS.

We are celebrating — and escalating! Image

The ADL is a pro-Israel lobbying org that cheer led Trump when he moved the US embassy to Jerusalem and tore up the Iran deal. Its CEO actually attended the ceremony for the former and took selfies. That it gets cited a neutral “civil rights group” is an unmitigated con job
The ADL not only lobbied against the Iran deal, they also praised Trump’s “maximum pressure” sanctions and assassination regime against Iran. What does this have to do with “civil rights” one may ask? Beats me! adl.org/news/press-rel…
A leaked memo revealed ADL planned on running PR for Netanyahu after he announced Israel was formally annexing the West Bank—while acting as if they weren’t defending the move so as to maintain liberal credibility jewishcurrents.org/adl-formulates…

It shouldn't be news that the @ADL is not an ally to progressive movements, and that it's time to #DroptheADL. The clear record of their neoconservative political agenda and their spying on and undermining of movements for justice goes back at least 30 years. (Thread) Phoot
In 1993, Robert Freidman details a huge domestic spying scandal wherein the @ADL's "Fact Finding" dept monitored 10k people and almost 1000 groups, including ACLU, NAACP, ACT-UP, progressive Jewish orgs, anti-Apartheid groups, and any/all Palestinian, Arab, or Muslim groups.
The @ADL intel was directly shared with their "official friends" -- the org's euphemism for the incredibly cozy relationships they've always had with U.S. FBI, CIA, and police and with such "friends" in Israeli and Apartheid South African spy agencies.

100+ organizations have joined the call to #DropTheADL. The campaign urges groups to rethink their relationship w/the Anti-Defamation League, which has a long history of spying on Black, Palestinian, & left-wing activists and undermining the rights of marginalized communities. Image
As early as the 1930s, the ADL spied on movement organizations, feeding information to the FBI. This surveillance continued for decades and targeted the Black freedom movement, activists against South African apartheid, Palestinian activists, and others.
In 1993, the San Francisco District Attorney investigated the ADL and found that an ADL-hired agent had been spying on and infiltrating movement organizations in seven different cities. Over 10,000 activists and 700 organizations were targeted. latimes.com/archives/la-xp…
