Nothing like waking up at 4:30am bc your dad is groaning so loudly—his breathing is labored and sounds like he's underwater due to how much liquid has pooled into his lungs, and his body is clearly in pain as he's trying to cough with three broken ribs and a punctured lung.
With every groan it gets louder and his body convulses even more. If his consciousness isn't suffering, his body clearly is. Imagine hearing your dying father groaning and grasping for life, even if his consciousness doesn't seem to be there.
His wife of 40 years, sitting alone in her wheelchair, holding his hand, still asleep by his side, unable to wake up due to pure exhaustion having not slept for almost 48 hours straight bc she doesn't want to leave her life partner alone for even a second.
