This is a long but important thread about my experience as an #AfricanNovaScotian woman who was #raciallyprofiled this afternoon at #TheSource store in #Elmsdale, #EastHants #NovaScotia.
An open letter to #TheSource, Elmsdale location, please tell your staff that consumer racial profiling based on a person’s colour is a violation of the #NovaScotiaHumanRightsAct.
After searching various stores online this afternoon, I went to the Source to purchase a new Canon printer because I always purchase ink here and have always received great customer service.

We love getting questions about mining, minerals and geology! We were asked if we know what these intriguing circles are in #Walton, #HantsCounty.

The person who asked isn’t the only one who has noticed the circles. With satellite images so easy to access on the Internet, others have also noticed them, including the excellent staff @NS_Energy_Mines.

They investigated them in the early 2000s, thinking they could be sand/mud volcanoes.
A sand volcano is a cone-shaped landform created by liquefied sand being expelled from underground onto the surface.

The East Gore Slate Quarry in #EastHants likely started operating in the mid-1800s and operated into the early 1900s.
Here's the story of the quarry and how it's connected to Courthouse Hill and the Rawdon #gold mines!

The historical quarry is on turn-of-the-century geological maps but there are no official records of its production, so precise dates aren’t available.
A mill was built nearby to turns its slate into roof shingles.

Today there is a modern slate quarry directly across Slate Quarry Road from the historical quarry.
One of the many old buildings that used East Gore slate for its roof was the courthouse on what we now call Courthouse Hill, but which was once known as Judgement Hill.

#NovaScotia has historically been one of the world’s largest suppliers of #gypsum. The mine in #Milford is the world's largest surface gypsum mine. Gypsum’s main use is as an ingredient in wallboard.

When #gypsum mining started in #NovaScotia in the late 1700s, it was done by farmers who extracted blocks from their farms, hauled it by horse and cart to #Windsor and sold it to local traders. It was then exported to the US east coast for use as fertilizer.

#Gypsum fixes alkaline (high pH) soil. US inventor #BenFranklin learned this from the French and brought the idea to the US in 1785.
