#MillerTwitterTakeover What are your 3 main pieces of advice for early faculty years (first 1-2 years)? What are some of the DOs and DONTs you swear by? #ECR
1) Find out your uni's expectations annual & promotion-grants, papers, teaching, independence from prev. mentors. WCM 1/n
Independence from previous mentors can be tricky, esp for those that work with big cohort data, like ARIC. So, being clear what is expected is key. It's a must to know how papers are valued: #, quality, impact factor, citations. Also, for grants, will a K be valued? 2/n
2) Find a mentor TEAM. One person will not be enough. You want substantive & professional development mentors. You may want people that look like you & that's a good thing, but sometimes for people of color, those folks aren't in your field. Meet with them & listen to them. 3/n

Out today: β€œThe semiotic diversity of doing reference in a deaf signed language” bit.ly/2Ed8YUL Lindsay Ferrara @NTNU, @bananabull @hvl_no and I looked at the different strategies signers use to introduce, maintain or reintroduce humans, animals and inanimate referents..
We analysed the usual suspects (eg conventional signs, pointing, enactment) but also oft-neglected English mouthing and invisible surrogates (where a confluence of indexing actions enables signers to imagine an entity in the signing space and behave as if it were present)...
In this dataset, choice of strategy most strongly motivated by activation status: new referents expressed with more conventionalised forms (eg manual signs and English mouthing); maintained and reintroduced referents involved fewer and more improvised, context-dependent stuff...

@theNASciences comes from #Casablanca in #Morocco and moved to @UMich for a #PhD on interaction of Mars & Venus atmosphere and solar winds. However, she had a crisis and wanted to give back to her community, and dove into #scipol, #ethics, #economics
She went on to do a Christine Mirzayan S&T fellowship via @aaas, one of the few options available to #international applicants (cc @IWS_Network). Wanting to engage #ECR, she applied for a position @theNASciences, got in, and never looked back #NSPNsymposium18
She now promotes #international development, security, and cooperation with @theNASciences, through #Science #technology and #innovation.
