Some take #ElderHolland’s directive to “defend the truth” as license to bring out the torches & pitchforks. They forget the companion instruction to love one another as Christ has loved you—w/compassion, forgiveness, & when appropriate, godly pity—never hate or harmful intent.
I have friends who have broken my heart w/their open rebellion against gospel truths to which they were firmly converted many years. Given a choice between fighting with me & receiving my godly pity—my brokenheartedness & continued love, devoid of anger—they’ll choose the fight.
Contention keeps the truth out of the argument. It grounds the debate in the exchange of provocative feelings & ad hominem attack. Your job as a representative of Christ is to see them as he does and be determined that we all make it back home together.

Some have asked why #MWEG engaged so publicly in this particular battle. We did not see this as a contest between Republicans & Democrats or between conservatism or liberalism. We reject the notion that every engagement in the civic sphere be driven by partisan motives.
We engaged out of a desire to protect the legitimacy of the #SupremeCourt. And we engaged because of our conviction that sexual assault allegations should be taken very seriously and investigated thoroughly.
