113.03/ Incredible.

[Alt-text: (1) the parody account "NYT Pitchbot" wrote a fictitious headline "Charles in Charge" and attributed it to Maureen D*owd on Sept. 8 (2) On Sept 10 D*wd wrote a column with that exact title.]

59.02/ Scoring a run on a balk is such sweet victorious humiliation. Like in NFL when a QB gives up a safety by running out the back of the endzone. Thanks Nationals. #LGM
59.03a/ One year without fans in the stands and they forgot how to act right.

The fans can't be abusive, throw objects, hurl slurs. This we know. But we cheer and boo. That's our job. And if players enjoy the cheering they need to fear the booing as well.

56.02/ Excellent shibboleth action here from Rabbi Ruttenberg, in a benevolent, non-murdery, way, of course.

56.03/ Honored with #haftara yesterday but it had been so long since I last did one that my eyesight has gotten bad enough that I was juggling a mask, fogged glasses, & the too small print of even a full-size Artscroll. And why did Yeshayahu have to make up so many weird words?!

THREAD #Elul -> Yesterday I shared a thread with some ideas about what life has taught me about Judaism. Here are a few more: Image
Whenever you do a mitzvah, stop and be mindful. Every mitzvah is there to teach us something, and it makes all the difference to pause and remember why. Mindless Judaism is not good for the soul.
When you daven, reflect carefully on the meaning of the words. Remember too that in davening we are part of a 4000 year-old choral symphony, made up of the voices of all the Jews of all the countries in all the centuries who said these words.

THREAD #Elul -> For the past two days, I’ve written threads about some of the things I learned from Judaism about life. But I also want to share some of the things I have learned from life about Judaism. Image
Never ever be embarrassed about being a Jew. Our people has survived so long and contributed so much, that you should see being Jewish as an honour and a responsibility.
Some people look down on Jews: they always have. In which case, we have to walk tall, so that, to see our face, they are forced to look up.

THREAD #Elul -> Following yesterday's thread, here are some more ideas about what Judaism has taught me about life: Image
You will find much in life to distress you. People can be careless, cruel, thoughtless, offensive, arrogant, destructive, insensitive and rude. That is their problem, not yours. Your problem is how to respond. Don’t react. Don’t respond...
....Don’t feel angry, or if you do, pause for as long as it takes for the anger to dissipate, and then carry on with the rest of life. Don’t hand others a victory over your own emotional state. Forgive, or if you can’t forgive, ignore.

THREAD #Elul -> Wisdom is free, yet it is also the most expensive thing there is, for we tend acquire it through failure or disappointment or grief. That is why we try to share our wisdom, so that others will not have to pay the price for it that we paid.
So in my threads this week, I want to focus first on some of the things Judaism has taught me about life, and then, about what life has taught me about Judaism. Here is part one (of two) of what Judaism has taught me about life:
Never try to be clever. Always try to be wise.

1/ I gave 2 divrei Torah on #KiTavo over Shabbas (to my captive audience family) & I thought I'd share them here.

First, of course, to explain: nearly every dvar Torah I've given since 2016 has been about the "Matzav", the #TrumpCrisis

How could I not?
2/ Trump (ym'sh) & his cult are pure evil, everything the Torah is against, everything the neviim warned us about, a violation of all the rules of life, kavod/respect & peace... and yet 70-80% of frum Jews support him & his organization.

The avoda-zara of Trumpism is a deep sin
3/ Any frum Jew, esp. rabbis, who support Trump (ym'sh) require teshuva, selicha and kappara. So before the yomim noraiim, I need to preach teshuva.

What's harder, for me, as a rabbi & therefore a representative of my people to Hashem, is how to argue we should be saved on YK

1/ The same RedHat goons who believed every weird conspiracy about Obama, who would parse his words for secret codes, many of whom have jumped headfirst into the Q mystery cult that claims Democrats & actors are selling children for food... don't believe in science or the news
2/ They deny the news that Trump (ym'sh) calls military people losers & mocks the heroic dead... but they believe in Q. Even without names on record, we all know the dead-mocking is true b/c he's done it on camera for YEARS. The evidence of his low character is overwhelming!
3/ I emphasize their simultaneous (a) belief in depraved and impossible conspiracies & (b) denial of overwhelming evidence to the contrary b/c it shows their GOP support isn't intellectual, it's emotional. It's characteriological. It's (anti) ethical. It's their rotten identity

THREAD #Elul -> A few years ago a newspaper headline caught my eye: “Streaming instead of dreaming”. Using phones or tablets before bedtime, it said, is stopping kids from sleeping. Image
A series of research exercises suggested that young people who use electronic devices around bedtime were twice as likely to have inadequate sleep and three times more likely to feel drowsy the next day. Even having one in the room and not using it, is, they said, bad for sleep.

THREAD #Elul -> As students return to school for the new academic year after such a challenging period, it once again reminds me how for Jews, education is not just what we know. It’s who we are. Image
No people ever cared for education more. Our ancestors were the first to make education a religious command, and the first to create a compulsory universal system of schooling. The rabbis valued study as higher even than prayer.
The Egyptians built pyramids, the Greeks built temples, the Romans built amphitheatres. Jews built schools. They knew that to defend a country you need an army, but to defend a civilisation you need education.

THREAD #Elul -> If you want to find your purpose in life, as we are mindful of Elul and the coming Yamim Noraim, think about the following sentence: “Where what you want to do meets what needs to be done, that is where God wants us to be.” Image
So many of us have passions and if you don't have a passion, take time out to discover it. Dream a lot. Think what would be a life you would really live for. Keep your dreams. Joseph dreamt dreams. A Jewish leader is one who dreams dreams and that's what you want to do.
But in the meanwhile, there's a world out there and that world has needs for some things and not others, at some times, and not others, and somehow or other, you have to connect to that world.

THREAD #Elul -> The place of doubt in Judaism is very interesting because most people define faith as certainty. I define faith as the courage to live with uncertainty. Image
The truth is that you can look at the world and find it meaningless; you can look at the world and find it meaningful. If you're looking for a life without doubt, without risk and without uncertainty, stop living because you cannot really live without taking risks.
In fact, the Bibles makes it pretty clear that God took a massive risk when He created humanity & that risk didn't play out well because by Genesis chapter six God regrets that He ever created man in the first place & it grieved Him, to His very heart, a key sentence for me.

Sure, "polls aren't votes", but 15 pts down means Trump's (ym"sh) vulnerable, dries up fundraising, allows GOP electeds to contradict him publicly, allows reporters to treat him normally & not as the magician of 2016 who commands a cult of violent kooks.
To combat the complacency that the polling imbalance could bring, I suggest telling fellow anti-Trumpites that no matter how much DJT is down in November, when you vote, it will feel as good as punching him in the face with all of your strength
