Mixed bag of UK labour market data... (short 🧵)

#Unemployment rate down on the quarter but up on the month, and flattered by rise in number of people no longer actively looking for work (incl. long-term sick)

#Employment rate (first chart 👇) still below pre-Covid levels...
Earnings data a little better than expected: average total #pay (incl. bonuses) rose 6.0% in 3m to September and regular pay (excl. bonuses) by 5.7%, although still falling in real terms.

And early PAYE estimates for October point to a 6.0% increase in median pay last month...
Payroll #employment rose another 74,000 in October and remains on strong upward trend.

But separate Labour Force Survey suggests total employment (incl. self-employment) is much weaker.

Both measures have pros and cons - take your pick!

In light of the recent wave of #layoffs from Meta, Redfin, and others, I'm noticing a major increase in stress and general anxiety. Even people with stable #employment are wondering about their future.

To stay safe, here are 5 ways you can future-proof your income: 🧵
1. Explore Freelancing.

Platforms like @Upwork can be a great way to generate some additional income at your own pace.

You can find part-time and full-time opportunities depending on your skill set.

In 2022, I managed to generate over $50,000 from freelance projects.
2. Learn new skills.

Platforms like @coursera provide tons of free learning courses with treasure troves of information.

You can learn at your own pace and add valuable high-income skills.

In 2022, I managed to complete over 4 courses on the platform.

Earlier this week the @federalreserve raised #policy rates at an extraordinary 75 basis point increment (its fourth time doing so this year), in an attempt to moderate excessively high levels of #inflation.
Still, if the central bankers were hoping to see signs of slowing in the persistently solid #LaborMarkets, as an indicator that policies were slowing growth and in turn #inflation, they may be somewhat disheartened by today’s data.
Indeed, nonfarm #payrolls increased by 261k jobs in Oct, with private employment rising an average of 262k/month over the past three months, which does not yet imply that the slowing that policymakers believe we’ll need to see to tame #inflation has arrived.

The @federalreserve’s #FOMC has now moved in 75 basis point increments four times this year to get to a sought-after #policy destination very quickly.
Yet, the destination seems to have moved further away with each subsequent elevated #inflation print, and with #employment in the country remaining very tight.
Hence, while moving the #FederalFunds rate at a very fast 75 bps increment seemed almost inconceivable several months ago, especially as the #Fed was still undertaking quantitative easing (#QE) in March, we have become used to this extraordinary increment.

There is no point in arguing about employment today; there is a lag between tightening and the #HOPE cycle. Claims and UR didn’t rise until 4Q of 2000 and 2007. Until then people thought “employment was strong” … just like today. #macro #employment
If claims and the UR aren’t rising by mid 2023 then you have an interesting discussion. #macro
Proof is in the charts (and pudding). #macro $SPY

#PCE #Core #Inflation keeps rising.

Main indicator for the #FederalReserve when judging whether or not to continue raising #interestrates.

#Powell was quite clear in his speeches that they will continue raising "into pain" as long as price stability is not achieved.

By "into pain", they are primarily referring to their dual mandate of price stability (#inflation) and maximum #Employment.

But there is not much pain showing up in the job market.

Last weekly jobless claims hit a 5-month low.…
So to summarize, #TheFed has 2 jobs:
1. Reduce #inflation (not done)
2. Maximize #employment (done)

And they've been adamant about raising #rates until 1. is done, even at temporary setbacks to 2.

Unless they plan on pulling a #BoE, anything short of #75bps/#100bps is hopium.

Today’s @federalreserve’s Federal Open Market Committee (#FOMC) meeting witnessed another historic 75 bps increase to policy rate levels (to a range of 3.0% to 3.25%) in an effort for the #CentralBank to manage its number one priority: fighting persistently high #inflation.
The #Fed, including in today’s meeting statement and in the Chair’s press conference, has been clearer than arguably any central bank in identifying its current goal and moving #InterestRates and #liquidity provision to achieve it.
Indeed, by moving the #Fed Funds rate for the third time in 75 bps increments we see clear evidence of a strong desire by the Committee to temper demand as a way to achieve its goal of #price moderation.

Today’s #JobsReport revealed an #economy that is producing #jobs at a slower pace than it has over the prior several months.
That said, a historic number of jobs have been created in this recovery since the fall of 2020, so a slowing in the pace of #growth isn’t unexpected.
Even with today’s somewhat slower rate of #hiring at 315,000 jobs for the month of August, the 3-month and 6-month average of #payroll gains has been 378,000 and 381,000 jobs, respectively, which is clearly indicative of slowing today from a point of strength.

“How to Get a Job in IT/Cyber”

The votes are in!

Out of 128 Votes:
86.7% voted for Home Labs, Blogs & Certs
13.3 % voted for Degree + Certs and that’s it.

Now here are some key takeaways:

#Job #employment #IT #cyber
While having certs, home lab experience and a blog will get you noticed, a degree can be of value due to the following reasons:
1. It required you to show up, work with others, complete work/projects and it develops soft skills that you wouldn’t get working by yourself.

While the pictures from the #WebbSpace Telescope have transfixed everyone with an interest in outer space, back on planet earth, investors are fixated on #recession. We looked at the history of recessions and found some interesting facts. Here’s the lowdown: 1/7
There have been 12 official recessions. On an average, they happen about every 6.5 years. The average period of #recession lasts about 10 months. But the ones in 1973, 1981, & 2007 lasted for well over a year. 2/7
Before the #pandemic, the deepest recessions that saw #GDP decline by more than 3%, started in 1957 (tightening of monetary policy), 1973 (stagflation, oil embargo) and 2007 (global financial crisis). 3/7

The #JobsReport came in at 372,000 jobs gained, the #unemployment rate at 3.6%, which was coupled with #wage growth of 5.1% year-over-year: all solid numbers in a historic context.
Still, when taken in the context of much of the #economic data coming in, last week’s #employment report reemphasized two key tenets of the economy and consequently of #investment markets: 1) the U.S., and indeed the global economy, is tangibly slowing…
…and 2) we are probably past the #employment peak and will likely witness #LaborMarket slowing in the back half of the year.

"To upgrade oneself, the object to work on is our brain. The process may include unlearning to learn and learning to unlearn. Whichever is the case the #brain can never be over exploited.

In every ideal #society, learning is required for universal relevance and/

Engaged in a discussion with one of my sons this morning, I made him realized there are ways we learn without alerting our #teacher in quote, so learning may be cheap atimes./

However, active learning comes by deep interactions between the master and the learner. It's therefore extremely tedious and most time not #achievable to be a master of what is not deeply learnt or handed over to one by a sacrificial #learning act.

Core #CPI (excluding those volatile #food and #energy components) came in at 0.6% month-over-month and rose 6.0% year-over-year.
Meanwhile, headline #CPI data printed at a very strong 1.0% month-over-month and came in at 8.6% year-over-year, spiking higher on #shelter, #gas and food costs.
These persistently outsized gains in #inflation are clearly having an impact on business and #ConsumerConfidence. Also, the #Fed’s favored measure of inflation, core #PCE, increased 0.34% in April, bringing the year-over-year figure for the measure to 4.9%, as of that month.

A #thread for #AutismAcceptanceWeek
Things #employers need to know, from a personal, very late diagnosed, #ActuallyAutistic perspective, with insights from career roles in organisational development and employment support.
The first thing to consider is how to involve existing #autistic #employees.
These are the people with lived experience of being autistic in your workplaces.
How can you make it safe for them to share their experiences?
How can you value their expertise?
Why does this matter?
Autistic people are used to being sidelined and marginalised, and being spoken over and ignored.
If employers are serious about #autism #inclusion in the workplace they need to fix this.
Some autistic employees may not even have disclosed for fear of stigma or discrimination.
