Some wonderful news 🗞 from over the weekend: 1 of 3 family detention centers has been emptied. 🎉

There’s still a long way to go to permanently shut them down in order to truly #EndFamilyDetention.

But jeez, #GoodNews feel nice đź’•
HUGE shoutout to @ShutDownBerks, @aldea_pjc and ALL the rockstars who worked night & day to #FreeThemAll.

We hope Dilley & Karnes follow in Berks’ footsteps and we finally put an end to the incarceration of migrant families.
The Biden Administration has the power to #EndFamilyDetention TODAY.

We don’t have to live in fear of this practice continuing or ever coming back. @POTUS has the ability to end families’ nightmares once & for all!

What's happening in Texas is criminal:
Food shortages. Unsafe drinking water. Impassable roads. Flooded homes. A humanitarian crisis like we’ve not seen before.

This is what's going on in immigrant detention centers in the midst of the #TexasFreeze & what you can do to help🧵👇🏾
We have 10 offices across the state and most of our 250+ staff members have been without power for much of the week.

Luckily, we've now been able to communicate with many of our clients & community members both in and out of detention centers.

But things are looking bleak.
Immigrants in detention centers are freezing cold and not able to get the word out about what’s going on inside these prisons.

Take Ubaldo's situation for example 👇🏾

Deportations are continuing at an alarming rate, especially of Black immigrants.

In the coming days, ICE is planning to deport around *1,800 people* to Haiti, Cameroon, Angola, Honduras, and elsewhere.

“Not One More is not an enforcement strategy.” - Cecilia Muñoz, Washington, D.C. Summer 2015, upon being silently shamed by immigration lawyers holding #EndFamilyDetention signs while she gave the keynote at the @AILANational annual conference.

We have not forgotten, @cecmunoz
She couldn’t even finish her prepared remarks. She couldn’t stay and look all of us in the eye. She knew.

She knew about the reports of children losing weight in the new for-profit baby jails she and her colleagues advised 44 to create.

She knew of the suicide attempts.
This article had already been published.

She knew.

They all did.

We are not going back to the reality they created.

Just when you thought it couldn't get worse: Private prison companies including @CoreCivic & @GEOGroup have decided to form an advocacy group designed to cover up the family separations, medical negligence & deaths we've all been a witness to.

nytimes.com/aponline/2019/…
This news hits hard.
But it also means we're doing our job right. We're getting through and it's scaring them. @theday1alliance, guess we'll be seeing your clients in court. #ShutDownKarnes #EndFamilyDetention
P.S. @AlexandraWilkes: You donated to us but considering you now defend private prisons that deny medical care to women, allow family separations to occur in their facilities, & feed our country’s addiction to imprisoning people of color, we’d be eager to give your money back.

When @DHSMcAleenan tries to sell an Immigration Babyjail as a “Gold Standard” think about what that means? It means indefinitely jailing children, for profit. It means traumatizing kids who are already traumatized. It means kids do not have freedom to play, to think, or to grow.
We watched today as the Secretary described the detention of children as being “campus-like.” Its not. Its prison-like. You are not free to leave. You have no privacy. The purpose of detaining kids is to isolate them from people who love them and the people who can help them.
In babyjail, your jailers are the parents, parents are the babysitters. Parents do not decide when or what kids eat. Your parents can not help you when you are sick or make any parental decisions. Kids become defiant, angry, depressed, helpless. Kids play, when guards let them.

Today, we're joining our colleagues at @ShutDownBerks, who have spent years fighting for the human rights of immigrant families. It's time for @GovernorTomWolf to do the same. Shut it down, Governor. #EndFamilyDetention keystoneprogress.org/blog/governor-…
@ShutDownBerks @GovernorTomWolf Here's a @WHYYNews piece from July that outlines clearly the irreparable harm being inflicted on children in our own state: whyy.org/articles/warni…
@ShutDownBerks @GovernorTomWolf @WHYYNews “Berks has allowed chronic health problems to go untreated in the facility,” it said. “Further, the mental health of the detained families is put in danger because its mental health care professionals do not speak Spanish.” Unacceptable, @GovernorTomWolf. Do something about it.

On January 21, 2017, we organized the largest single-day protest in US history. We came together as women, femmes, and allies to speak out, and we set the stage for the resistance movement that continues today.

YOU did this. YOU made this happen.

📸 @TheAlexArbuckle
On January 28, 2017—just one week after the first Women’s March—we flooded airports nationwide to protest the Muslim Ban.

Women who marched together went to airports together. People who met at women’s marches came together again to say #NoMuslimBan.

On January 31, 2017—just 10 days after the March—we went back to DC to voice our outrage of the nomination of Jeff Sessions. We continued our call to #StopSessions for over one year after that.

“SHE CAME TO THE US BECAUSE

the gang told her if she didn’t pay the extortion money they demanded, they would kill her and her young daughter, and make her watch them kill her daughter

THIS WAS NOT THE WORST STORY.”

A harrowing

♦️Project Corazon♦️

tale from #L4GG’s @mgremb:
Even worse was a mom who came to the US with her daughter “Celia” (not her real name). Her other daughter had been kidnapped by the gang a month ago and never seen again. The gang said Celia was “next,” and threatened to kill the rest of the family, so they left.
It’s taken me a while to write about the time I spent with the Dilley Pro Bono Project at the immigrant family detention center. It’s difficult to put into words the jarring mix of hopefulness and fear, the moms waiting for news and the laughter, crying and sniffles of children.

Happening now - Senate Dirksen Office Building: Advocates and community members arriving to protest hearings on admin efforts to jail more migrant families and undermine the Flores settlement. #EndFamilyDetention #EndDetention #FamiliesBelongTogether immigrantjustice.org/press-releases… Image
Advocates are bearing witness to 12,800 - the # of children in gov't custody, skyrocketing not because more children are coming but because of dragnet immigration enforcement causing fear that coming forward to care for a child will lead to deportation. nytimes.com/2018/09/12/us/…
That fear is compounded by a new info-sharing policy between HHS and ICE that undermines HHS's child welfare mission and turns it into an enforcement agent for ICE. In a just world, today's hearing would be all about calling for its rescission. Read more: immigrantjustice.org/staff/blog/una…

Happening now: Long line waiting to get into the Senate Judiciary hearing on family separation. Hundreds of families remain separated and accountability is overdue. I will tweet out news from the hearing on this thread. #familiesbelongtogether
.@ChuckGrassley has opened the hearing. The room is overflowing, with many advocate mamas here with their children in their arms, protesting the rights abuses that continue to unfold.
.@SenFeinstein is delivering her opening with a focus on the appalling lack of government transparency regarding the family separation crisis. Months into the crisis she reminds us that we still don't know the total number of children separated from their parents....

Heartfelt apologies for the disappointment felt by my 1000s of new MAGA followers who read the thread I wrote about my meeting with Pres. Obama that’s bounced around 19M times (literally). But maybe you’ll be interested in what @AlexNowrasteh and @mkolken have to say. #FF
It has been amazing to watch a couple thousand people tweet some version of “where was your outrage when Obama did it?!” at liberals and fake news outlets, while simultaneously showing zero outrage now, and doing nothing to stop it. If that’s the takeaway, idk, Man. IDK.
There used to be three or four main idealogical tent poles to conservatism and the Republican Party: (1) libertarianism/limited government “less government = more freedom; (2) “Moral Majority”/WWJD/“values voters” (3) Fiscal conservatives (4) strong national defense. Not anymore.

Friends, the family separation + family detention ramp up is best explained by the Overton window concept. Make things really really horrible and then the just horrible will seem OK. #EndFamilyDetention
The #SingleStagingArea explicitly includes the idea of detaining the families together. Please listen to the advocates and communities who have been fighting to keep families together AND reunifying families for years. We’re not new at this.
If you are new to these issues, please pay attention to who is pushing the ideas. People who have an intimate knowledge of the history and booby traps of the system or people who just noticed?

President Trump just signed an EO announcing the “end” to family separation. Make no mistake this “solution” is actually to jail families indefinitely. @PWolgin breaks down why family jails are not the solution to #KeepFamiliesTogether #EndFamilyDetention americanprogress.org/?p=452571
Republicans in Congress have proposed a number of bills that would equally incarcerate children, indefinitely, alongside their parents. However, family incarceration is not only expensive, inhumane, and highly traumatic for children, but it’s also completely unnecessary.
The government can ensure that asylum seekers show up for court hearings and comply with the process by using proven alternatives to detention. #EndFamilyDetention

Let’s be clear about what this Executive Order does: Instead of imprisoning children in separate internment camps away from their parents, this administration will now imprison children in the same internment camps as their parents.
The Executive Order @realDonaldTrump just signed does nothing to end the “zero-tolerance policy” that automatically criminalizes any and all immigrants who cross the border without legal papers, including those seeking asylum.

It does nothing to end the imprisonment of children.
Children locked in “tender age” prison camps will still be locked in camps. Family detention camps.
