Tournament football is a strange beast. I’m no expert but I’ve been watching it long enough to know this much: 🧵 #ENGGER #England
1. Pre-tournament form, reputations and hype mean precisely fuck all once proceedings kick off. c.f. defending world champions France had the likes of Henry, Trezeguet and a (half fit) Zidane in 2002 - and they still went out without scoring a single goal.
2. Group stage form means jack shit too. How many times have we seen teams look like world beaters (cf the Dutch in Euro 2020) only to go out with a whimper in the knockout stages?

Übrigens das einzige Fussball Finale, welches dieses Jahr für mich relevant ist.
England gewinnt jetzt gegen Deutschland in Wembley 3:0 und dann war es das mit den internationalen Titeln für die nächsten 60 Jahre.😉

#ENGGER - 𝐓𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝

Key points:

🔴Sterling a world-class talent when in the mood
🔴3-4-3 pinned the Germans back
🔴Low's leaky backline bites again
🔴Grealish Game-Changer
🔴Back 5 helped English midfield (options)

Starting lineup thoughts, the Saka decision was brave and the correct one as he can penetrate space inside and outside. Perfect for a counter attack set up.

Abit too perfect as its effectiveness ended up pushing the Germans back...
As we can see the beauty of the 3-4-3 is that by matching the German formation, England went man for man and the Germans were forced to match them.

This freed up Saka and Sterling from double marking and they were dangerous in the 1st half. Germany got caught out several times.

Without players with at least one parent or grandparent born overseas, #England would be down to just 3 players. And if you trace the families of almost all the #ThreeLions squad back further, you'll find stories of migration #FootballMovesPeople #ENGGER Image
Find out how migration has shaped more than just #England's starting line-up:

This would be my England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 line up for tonight. (Thread)

Quick analysis (and general thoughts) as to why and I expect many people will disagree especially about the midfield so if you do please let me know why:

I start by saying I have a lot of respect for Southgate as a manager, I’m not necessarily criticising him as I’m not in a place to do so, but the 3-4-3 system for me at least is very necessary to win tonight.
The system (3-4-3):

Two reasons for this:

1. Stop the German overload on the flanks when they are in possession and go 3-2-5. With a 4-3-3 they would simply play around it with the wing-backs. Likely a similar result and performance to the Portugal vs Germany game with 4-3-3.

@arndzeigler @sportstudio @sportschau
Zunächst waren es lediglich Halbfinalspiele.
(Gruppen-1. gegen den Gruppen-2. der anderen Gruppe)
Seit 1996 gibt es Viertelfinal- & seit 2016 Achtelfinalspiele !
Aber von welcher Regelmäßigkeit spreche ich ?
2/8 ...
@arndzeigler @sportstudio @sportschau
Nun, das jeweilige Finalspiel war seit der EM 1984 immer im Wechsel zuvor
KEIN Gruppenspiel - ein Gruppenspiel - KEIN Gruppenspiel - usw.

1984 Frankreich - Spanien 2:0
=> zuvor KEIN Gruppenspiel
