What is Synethic Intelligence? (A Thread)

Synthetic intelligence = AI on steroids +
generative AI + composite AI + adaptive AI

#AI #MachineLearning #SyentheticIntelligence
Synthetic intelligence is the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as understanding natural language, recognizing images, and learning from data.
Unlike traditional computer programs, which are programmed to follow specific rules, synthetic intelligence systems can learn from data and improve their performance over time. This makes them incredibly powerful tools for solving complex problems. #MachineLearning #DeepLearning

Prompted by @LynnFOI, a [Thread] on the #NHSTrusts that cut #commercial deals to #copy their patients' data* to (formerly) Lord Drayson's now-delisted "AI" company, @SensyneHealth

A few thoughts on citational practice and scams in the #ethicalAI space, inspired by something we discovered during my #ethNLP class today:

>>
Today's topic was "language variation and emergent bias", i.e. what happens when the training data isn't representative of the language varieties the system will be used with.

The course syllabus is here, for those following along:

Week by week, we've been setting our reading questions/discussion points for the following week as we go, so that's where the questions listed for this week come from.

If a company cannot even pretend to care about its internal "Ethical AI" co-leader, how much do you think they care about the rest of us?

In the wake of Google's outing of @timnitgebru, my two cents on #AIethics #BigTech #IStandWithTimnit: annajobin.medium.com/why-dr-timnit-…
I see @MiaD reached the same conclusion, expressing it much more eloquently:

"Gebru and others are the last line of defense in our quest for ethical and inclusive tech. If we don’t stand up for them now, soon there will be no one left to fight for us."

miad.medium.com/dr-timnit-gebr…
More food for thought -- and action --, which I will have to sit with myself (because 🔥🔥🔥), comes from @UpFromTheCracks: "We must support Timnit and acknowledge that support isn’t enough."

This is a really important paper for #NLProc, #ethNLP and #ethicalAI folks.

1/n
The authors look deep into a use case for text that is ungrounded in either the world or any commitment what's being communicated but nonetheless fluent, apparently coherent, and of a specified style. You know, exactly #GPT3's specialty.

2/n
What's that use case? The kind of text needed, and apparently needed in quantity, for discussion boards whose purpose is recruitment and entrenchment in extremist ideologies.

"The global landscape of AI ethics guidelines"

Our peer-reviewed paper (w\ @MarcelloIenca & @EffyVayena) has just been published by @NatMachIntell. We analyzed 84 systematically retrieved AI principles/guidelines for “ethical AI”. 1/n

➡️nature.com/articles/s4225…
@MarcelloIenca @EffyVayena @NatMachIntell We found 11 ethical principles referenced overall. Only five of them are common to more than half of our sources: transparency, justice & fairness, non-maleficence, responsibility, and privacy. Solidarity, human dignity, and sustainability are significantly underrepresented. 2/n
@MarcelloIenca @EffyVayena @NatMachIntell Moreover, despite the apparent convergence around certain principles in numerical terms, our in-depth thematic analysis paints a much more complicated picture. We show substantive divergences among all 11 ethical principles in relation to four major factors. 3/n

Is #EthicalAI possible? What does the term even mean? And how can we avoid "Ethics washing" (companies exaggerating their capability in equitable AI)? @BinaryDistrict’s day-long #EthicalAIconf on 10th Sept features 12 subject experts from diverse fields eventbrite.co.uk/e/ethical-ai-i…
@BinaryDistrict My own answers:
(1) We can't expect to make real progress with Ethics for AI whilst we're still fuzzy about Ethics for humanity,
(2) Ethics involves prioritising safety and fairness, but is more than that,
(3) Ethics depends on agreement on what is meant by human flourishing
