L'11 marzo di 354 anni fa stava per avere inizio la più grande ed importante eruzione laterale mai avvenuta sull'#Etna in epoca storica. Si trattò di un evento quasi spartiacque dal punto di vista vulcanologico e culturale per la regione etnea. 🧵 1/10
L'eruzione fu preceduta da una corposa ed intensa sequenza sismica che interessò le pendici del vulcano sin dal mese di febbraio. Tale sequenza raggiunse il culmine nella notte tra il 10 e l'11 marzo, ovvero poche ore prima dell'inizio dell'eruzione. 2/10
Alle ore 16:30 dello stesso giorno, ben cinque fratture eruttive differenti iniziarono ad aprirsi tra i 950 e i 700 metri di quota sul fianco meridionale del vulcano. Tra di esse, la più importante ed attiva è stata quella localizzata alle porte della città di Nicolosi. 3/10

L'eruzione è iniziata con l'apertura di una piccola frattura eruttiva sul fianco settentrionale del cratere di sud-est, la nuova vetta del vulcano attivo più alto d'Europa.

INGV reported that Strombolian activity from all four of Etna’s summit craters, the Southeast Crater (SEC), Northeast Crater (NEC), Bocca Nuova (BN), and Voragine (VOR), was visible during 8-14 February.
The frequency and intensity of explosions at SEC were variable; almost continuous strong explosions originated from two vents in the E part of the top of the cone. Tephra accumulated near the top of the cone and rolled several tens of meters down the flanks.

Il tutto è iniziato nel cuore della notte quando il tremore vulcanico, l'attività infrasonica e le deformazioni del suolo hanno subito diverse variazioni.
Poi verso le 3:50 è aumentata anche l'attività stromboliana alle due bocche del cratere di sud-est.

Alle 4:20 poi l'attività stromboliana è evoluta in spettacolari fontane di lava che hanno alimentato due flussi lavici: uno in direzione sud-ovest nella zona del Monte Frumento Supino, e l'altro verso est all'interno della Valle del Bove.

Un nuovo parossisma è avvenuto questa mattina sull'#Etna.
Il fenomeno è iniziato alle 10:08 circa con una forte intensificazione dell'attività stromboliana al cratere di Sud-Est.
Le fontane di lava hanno creato una nuova colata lavica che si muove verso ovest.

Purtroppo a causa delle condizioni meteo non ottimali non è stato possibile vedere l'attività eruttiva nella sua interezza.
Sappiamo comunque che l'attività ha creato un grandissimo pennacchio di ceneri e gas.

Tutti i parametri eruttivi sono drasticamente aumentati.
Il tremore vulcanico ha raggiunto livelli molto alti, il picco è stato raggiunto intorno alle 10:20.
Sempre intorno a quell'ora si è registrata una netta deformazione clinometrica delle stazioni ad alta e media quota.
