The panel is ready for @The3Million to explain to us @LibDems the issue of #citizensrights / #Brexit at the #LibDemConf.

You can watch it live on their Facebook.
👉 facebook.com/the3million/
Key points from @The3Million
⭕ Guaranteeing #citizensrights into law with primary legislation
⭕ Physical proof for Settled status
⭕ Keeping voting rights

The current EU settlement scheme is failing a third of EU citizens by forcing them to accept the wrong status.
What will happen to the EU citizens who miss the deadline to apply for Settled status?

⭕ They will become unlawful residents subject to the Hostile environment from the @ukhomeoffice

👉 We need a declaratory system where EU citizens are considered lawful per default.

So, this is happening right now. Medicine & treatment shortages already. How will making things even worse make life better? ⬇️

How much more will it take to make enough people see Brexit is a bad decision?

Then more rights were taken #EUElections2019 #DeniedMyVote #ReasonsToRevoke

Today is possibly .@theresa_may's last day as PM, if .@BorisJohnson can command a majority (which is in some doubt...)

So it's a great opportunity to look back at some of the *highlights* of Mrs May's premiership in memes👇
13 JUL 2016: May was appointed as PM and named her Cabinet shortly thereafter, surprising many by giving 3 of the top #Brexit-related jobs to arch-brexiters Boris Johnson, David Davis & Liam Fox. Sheer folly, or genius in making them own what they'd sold? Sadly, the former😢
/1.
5 OCT 2016: With such a narrow result, the country could be forgiven for expecting May to propose a consensual solution, as Norway PM Erna Solberg had done in a similar situation. Most Remainers would've accepted #Norway.

May's #CitizensOfNowhere speech crushed all hope.

Today, Spain's Supreme Court ruled that @junqueras, elected as an MEP by well over one million citizens in the #EUelections2019 of 26 May, would not be allowed to collect his credentials and complete the necessary paperwork in order to take up his seat on 2 July.
Javier Pérez Royo is a Spanish jurist and Professor in Constitutional Law at the University of Seville. This is my translation of the opinion article he has written on today's developments. Please see the original article at the end of the thread:
Oriol Junqueras has not been convicted by any final judgement that might prevent him from exercising his political rights, which obviously include the right to stand as an electoral candidate.

This is how the Brexit Party dominated social media ahead of the EU elections. bit.ly/2HH16O8

But on Facebook, more is going on. Here’s our investigation into the murky world of closed groups

Closed Facebook groups are private; only approved members can see their content.

On both pro and anti-Brexit groups, Newsnight found disinformation and abuse

Some posts share links to known conspiracy or alt-right websites.

For example, several groups shared content from a website, Brexit Betrayal News, with links to the QAnon conspiracy bbc.in/2Wf56hZ

The democratic swindle of the #spitzenkandidat .

#democracy #EUelections2019

"Legally, the European Council makes the proposal, and the Parliament votes on it. The Treaty does NOT say that the European Council may propose only candidates who have been presented before as spitzenkandidat. Such process would illegally limit the European Council’s power.
The European Parliament cannot claim simultaneously that it imposes the parameters applied to choose the candidates and then votes on them. There must be a balance between the two institutions and the Spitzenkandidat system does not respect it."

Why @krls & @toni_comin must be allowed to take their seats in the @Europarl_EN
"The essential step to become an MEP is to receive enough support. #Catalans understood this and delivered massive majority support to @krls, @toni_comin, @ClaraPonsati, and the whole list"
@boye_g

1
"#Spain's #SupremeCourt should suspend the national arrest warrants against @krls & @toni_comin. Both now enjoy immunity that the Supreme can't interfere with. They must decide to respect the law or not, but the little credibility they still have in Europe is at risk."
@boye_g

2
Asked whether @krls & @toni_comin must swear to uphold the Constitution in person before #Spain's Central Electoral Board before taking office, @boye_g said the rule was out-of-date, against EU law, and, if the #SupremeCourt got involved in this battle, it would surely lose.

Vote fragmentation in the #EUelections2019, a hopefully-not-too-long thread:

So after a day crunching the numbers and colouring in maps it is clear that the splitting of both the Remain vote and Leave vote on Thursday affected the final results quite drastically. 1/
First let’s look at the explicitly pro-No Deal parties, The Brexit Party and UKIP, as the picture is more straightforward and the changes less extreme. 2/
(I shan’t be including the Conservatives in this because they are, or at least were at the time we voted, offering something very different to No Deal and, according to Lord Ashcroft’s poll, received votes primarily for non-Brexit reasons.) 3/

Citizen K on

#EuropeanElectionResults :

- Mainstream politics will continue to lose ground unless they will renew & restructure themselves by organisational architecture, people, messages, technology.

- Leaning toward extremists in messaging will only benefit the extremists.
Citizen K comments on #EuropeanElectionResults :

- 51% turnout may look promising but deserves a deeper analysis.

- Whose votes increased most? Therefore who mobilized her voters more..

Based on these results, it is hard to say the champion of this is the mainstream politics..
Citizen K on #EuropeanElectionResults :

- Countries who joined the EU after 2004 are the countries with least participation Slovakia, Czechia, Croatia, Bulgaria..

- Alarming for the success rate of European integration, power of European dream.

On #Brexit, these #EUelections2019 show that, if a political party stands in the middle of the road, it gets squashed. That‘s what I predicted when I resigned from Government last year. And it’s what has happened to @Conservatives and @UKLabour
So what next? If the purpose of government is to follow the will of the people (at any cost), the only politically viable Brexit is a hard one (WTO etc). But neither major political party will get a Westminster majority by delivering Hard Brexit without explicit public consent
And forget any soft Brexit. It’s not politically viable (for the record, I’ve always held that it’s the worst of both worlds) and anyone thinking we get further concessions from the @EU_Commission by playing hardball is living in cuckoo land. The WA is it, take it or leave it

1) 4 authentic successful, coherent pro Remain voices
#EUelections2019

In some ways this is the best outcome for Remain & #FinalSay, because the Labour/Tory #Brexit conspiracy is broken & LDs, Greens, SNP & PC can emerge with an unambiguous message - no #Brexit is a good Brexit
2) Remain has had since day 1 a single overriding barrier - the media, especially the BBC, have overwhelmingly favoured Farage, the Tories & Labour, and all 3 are on the same #Brexit side, that Brexit could be pain free, cost free, jobs first if it was just done properly
3) are all Farage's supporters no deal zealots? Of course not, they largely believe, like the Tories, that stropping off will force the EU27 to a deal.

Labour believes that kind words and the power of magic grandpa will do the same thing

"I can do #Brexit better than you can"

Important result that Tories lost twice as many seats to #Remain parties than #BrexitParty. BXP swapped for 23 UKIP and gained extra 5 to get 28. Tories lost 15 seats - 5 to BXP and 10 to Remain.
#EUelections2019 #EP2019
Conservative MPs must be aware that it's too late for new members to join & vote in #ToryLeadershipContest. However, if a general election is coming, there will probably be time to take part in selections/deselections of MP. This may be by #Remain voters.
#EUelections2019
6M plus signed a petition to revoke Article 50. If 2.5% of them joined the Conservatives, then they would be likely bigger than the current membership. Won't be enough time for #ToryLeadership in the #ToryLeadershipContest but possibly enough time before any General Election.

What are the major takes of #EUelections2019 ? (thread) 1/7

“The 2019 EU elections will come down in history as giving birth to an embryonic form of EU political space" #EUelections2019
“The record-high turn-out across the continent proves that these elections were felt differently. The unfolding of Brexit as well as unprecedented mobilization by both political parties & civil society ahead of the vote contributed to make these elections more salient" 2/7 #EU
“While these #EUelections seemingly remained a largely domestic affair, with national referenda on governing parties, in countries such as France, Italy and Greece, these elections mark the birth of a more political Europe” 3/7 #EUelections2019

#EUelections2019 results about to start arriving. This prediction by party family and country makes a good baseline:
Polls have closed in Germany. Exit poll suggests result there could be towards bottom end of expectations range for centre-left SPD and hard-right AfD, slightly better than expected for Greens.
Noteworthy, if German exit poll accurate:
- AfD result only 3 points up on 2014, before migration crisis
- First ever Germany-wide election where Greens bigger than SPD
- Early indication that the big story of #EP2019 will be not "populists triumph" but pan-spectrum fragmentation

OCTOBER 2017
Spain spent €87M of taxpayers' money on violently failing to prevent a referendum from taking place in Catalonia. It then refused to acknowledge the votes of 2.3 million citizens & launched a brutal crackdown, revoking home rule.
DECEMBER 2017
The Catalan elections called by Rajoy were won by the pro-independence camp despite having several candidates in prison & exile. The Spanish govt. allowed & encouraged these candidates to stand.
("It would be a good thing for Puigdemont to stand in the elections.")
DECEMBER 2017 - MAY 2018
The Spanish govt. & judiciary then proceeded to veto not one, not two but three Catalan presidential candidates: @KRLS, @jordialapreso & @jorditurull (imprisoned halfway through his own investiture debate). President @QuimTorraiPla was the fourth choice.

"Whatever our background", @theresa_may said in her #MayResigns speech, "we stand together".
Standing together.
Sounds good.
But:
🛑 This was you on 3 July 2016, @theresa_may, choosing to make 3.6 million EU citizens at home in the UK bargaining chips in Brexit negotiations. 1/
🛑 This was you on 5 October 2016, @theresa_may, choosing to cast EU citizens (and many more people) as "citizens of nowhere", implying that we do not contribute, are not real citizens, here in the UK. 2/
🛑 This was you on 26 June 2017, @theresa_may, choosing to introduce #SettledStatus as the new status for EU citizens already at home in the UK. This status is *not* actually just granted, but can only be acquired by *applying*, and strips EU citizens of rights in the process. 3/

Our social media exit poll shows that the @brexitparty_uk had *over 50%* of the total share of voice across both Twitter and Facebook of all political parties during #EUelections2019 in the UK
Moreover, when combined with UKIP's share of voice the hard Brexit parties combined got nearly 2/3 of the total share of voice. UKIP even pushed Labour into third place for their total number of shares during the #EUelections2019 period.
The Brexit party, the DUP and UKIP combined also produced 34% of all content posts from all the major political parties combined - showing they were posting significant amounts of content (especially UKIP).

The remainer media have gone into overdrive over tales of EU citizens being denied their rightful vote. But, just like bogus tales of Brexit Party leaflets being posted in the same envelope as postal votes, the tales of #DeniedMyVote don't stack up. Thread
Firstly EU citizens ARE entitled to vote in our local elections. They CAN vote in the EU elections BUT, to prevent them voting both in the UK and their home country, they must complete a special form to say they are voting here and not at home.
This is not a well known process; I've worked in elections for over a decade and hadn't heard of the form until 2 months ago. How many people supposedly "#DeniedMyVote" didn't not complete the form and just assumed they could vote like in the local elections?
