Tomorrow is the Day for #TruthandReconciliation – a day to acknowledge the histories and legacies of residential schools, and to honour the survivors, their families & communities. It aligns with #OrangeShirtDay, which carries a very important message: #EveryChildMatters. (1/4) Image
#AB’s government is committed to walking the path of reconciliation together with Indigenous peoples. Commemorating the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of this process. (2/4)
Now is a time for us to learn more about the residential school system and to continue our work toward reconciliation. I invite all #AbEd schools to participate in activities led by the @NCTR_UM and the AB Regional Consortia #ARPDC. (3/4)

Tomorrow, September 30th, is the second National Day for Truth & Reconciliation in Canada. The "Orange Shirt Day" acknowledges survivors of (and those who died in) residential schools. The day was the TRC's Call to Action 80 and made a federal holiday last year. A settler's 🧵.
In the lead up to this year's holiday I was surprised (only a little) by the rapidity of the government's desire to re-embrace the 🇬🇧's colonialism. Particularly when the new sovereign is a religious crusader repeatedly rejecting calls to denounce the Doctrine of Discovery.
The monarch of the UK was accepted as Head of State in Canada without so much as a debate in the House of Commons. I hope that tomorrow causes more people in Canada to pause and think about the de-colonialization of our country and how to achieve Reconciliation in law and life.

The rise of pieces "debunking" the findings of the possible locations of unmarked graves of missing children who died at residential schools is deeply concerning. Framing these as "debunking" is harmful. Here's why. A🧵
The initial media response to the findings from Kamloops did contain misleading information. Part of this was a lack of knowledge about how ground-penetrating radar works. Part of this was about terminology.
Inaccurate reporting, however, doesn't mean that there aren't thousands of graves of children who died at residential schools, most of which are unmarked, even if they were initially marked when buried.

Today I stood to mark the one year anniversary of British Columbians and Canadians being awoken with the reality of the fate of thousands of Indigenous children who disappeared and never came home from residential schools. 1/ #bcpoli #EveryChildMatters #IndigenousPeoples

As a Lejac residential school survivor I stayed off social media yesterday knowing there was going to a report on St. Joseph's school unmarked graves.
I'm an elder now. I never thought I would be here still.

Chrystos and I reminded our selves that our lives would be cut short like our relatives. That we would never live to see justice for genocide.
Yesterday more graves were confirmed. It was another punch to the gut. Rage has burned a hole in my soul.

I know I will never live long enough to see the catholic church and its criminals pay for what they did.
White supremacy is propping up the genocide deniers. On here, the hatred is everyday. Even presenting findings like yesterday's by Chief Sellars will be branded false.

My 73 year old mum was medivac’d to Ottawa today in order to have a diagnostic procedure that is normally available in Iqaluit.

(I’m on leave from Director, Travel Programs, Health. Sharing info that’s public knowledge)

The cost of a single medivac can be upwards of $40,000
In 2019 the Health department forecasted 2,400 medevacs for coming year, based on that growth.

That’s compared to about 33,000 planned medical travel trips planned for the year.

The territory’s proposed budget overall Medical Travel budget was $92.3 million.

The current..
..state of emergency in Iqaluit has impacted our only hospital’s ability to provide my mum’s urgently required procedure because the equipment that is needed can not be safely sterilized due to the fuel in the water..

CW: residential schools, genocide

A very special morning. As part of a process of reckoning and truth telling about the Church’s role in the Indian Residential School System, and the deep and painful impact of Canada’s colonial policies on Indigenous People… 1/x Image
…the St Andrew’s Wesley United Church in Vancouver have commissioned Squamish Nation artist Xwalacktun, OBC, to design a Coast Salish house post. This piece will honour the children who were lost, and tell the story without burying the history. 2/x Image
The imagery is profound. There are children in the protective arms of mother bear, a Thunderbird representing the Great Spirit, and it is holding a bronze plaque which tells the painful story of the church’s own involvement in residential schools. 3/x Image
