Have been wanting to do a thread on #ADHD, as I was diagnosed earlier this year. As with the condition itself, which seems to fairly binary in its expression--off or on, in or out--there's little balance in how folks seem to respond. They're either accepting, or telling me 1/x
it's not an excuse. <--And these are thr folks who typically try to sympathize by highlighting their own periodic forgetfulness... As if that's all there is to #ExecuiveDysfunction. The most basic analogy I've come up with is it's kinda like the first Astromech droid Owen & 2/x
try to buy from the Jawas in #SWEp4; if you recall, it moves a few feet, halts, and sparks fly out of its head. It's said to have a bad motivator. And that is what's at core of #ExecutiveDysfunction--shoddy motivation. While holding that in mind, also consider something I 3/x
@NeuroRebel Executive Function issues. I knew about the social stuff, and had learned a fair bit about the sensory stuff (and my parents knew and understood my more obvious sensory issues), but I had no idea about the #ExecutiveDysfunction or how much it affected. #ActuallyAutistic
@NeuroRebel My response is affected, however, by the fact that I was diagnosed as an adult a few years ago, and my sister had been training towards becoming an SLP for years before that, so we knew I was autistic and some of the elements involved before I was diagnosed. EF was new to me.
@NeuroRebel And it explained *so much* that neither I nor my parents nor my siblings had understood - like how really, *really* hard it is for me to keep my place clean.
