Negotiating a TT #faculty job offer or retention w/your chair or dean? It's a situation that systematically disadvantages women + BIPOC faculty. Here's what I learned after years of @coacheproject research about what's REALLY on the table (potentially). A🧵1/n #AcademicTwitter
The @coacheproject Faculty Retention & Exit Study asks tenured + TT departures + retentions at R1s to list everything that was included, formally or informally, in their negotiations. Base salary was #1, but in the category of "other compensation" -- lots of discretion. 2/
These deals included summer salary in endless combos, e.g., 1 month for 5 yrs, 2 months for 3 yrs... so many variations that we never had time to organize them all. If you're negotiating, explore these possibilities; if you're in administration, interrogate them. #equity 3/

Dear @UWaterloo about this hardline on returning to F2F Feb 28. A major element of #LongCovid seems to be microglial inflammation (that’s in the brain) yielding neurological damage. The prevalence of long COVID varies among studies, but 5-10% is a conservative estimate. 1/3 🧵
A #University’s greatest asset is their people. You’ve invested so much in all your #faculty. Mostly we are valued for our #brains. I wonder if those pushing the “learn to live with COVID” agenda have done the math on what it would cost if 5% of us got #LongCovid #NeuroCOVID 2/3
Even 3+ months of #brainfog in 100 of your highly skilled faculty must be $$$. Add to that our 6200 grad #students and 36000 undergrads here to develop their brains. Do they know the gamble they are taking with their Neuro #health? @yourWUSA I don’t get the rush 🤷🏻‍♀️🧠 #COVID19 3/3

Today is my last Friday before I become #faculty 🤯 and I wanted to take a second to reflect a little on my #postdoc experience. Spoiler alert: yes I grew a lot and met amazing people but no, postdocing wasn’t fun and I wouldn’t want to do that again. #PostdocLife 1/n
First the good - I learned and grew a lot during my postdoc and thanks to that, my career has shifted in exciting new directions. It also taught me not to be scared to try something new! Remember: PhD grads are really good at learning new stuff. #PostdocLife 2/n
What I learned cost me a lot though… being a #postdoc is by definition full of uncertainty and pressure: you don’t know where you’ll be living in 1-2yrs, funding insecurity for some, pressure to do great so you can land your next job, etc… #PostdocLife 3/n

Today we’ll be talking about the recruiting & hiring of disabled people for #faculty positions. Only ~4% of US faculty identify as disabled; not exactly representative of the ~20% of undergrads who are disabled...

Have you ever had a disabled professor? 1/6 #NDEAM #HigherEd
Sgoutas-Emch et al write about cohort hiring as a strategy to diversity #STEM faculty hires. This paper focuses on increasing the representation of women of color in UCSD’s STEM departments and outlines the steps of their cohort hiring ftp.arizonaea.org/home/68489.htm 2/6
The Urban Universities for Health also put out a report on the experiences of universities that have adopted cohort hiring practices. 70% of the universities reported an increase in faculty diversity following the implementation of cohort hiring tinyurl.com/CohortHire 3/6

Attn #Faculty:
Do NOT create assignments that FORCE #Black students to relive this trauma.
Black students must be allowed the space, flexibility, & support to process ON THEIR OWN TERMS.
#BlackLivesMattter must NOT be a mandatory path to success in your classroom. Now or Ever.
Bottom Line: Before #courseprep goes horribly wrong: Police killings can not be required assignments for Black students. #AcademicTwitter It’s not #currentevents; it’s trauma inducing.
To be clear, I’m not saying these topics should not be included in the classroom.
They absolutely should.
I’m saying it is our responsibility as faculty to integrate them in a way that respects and protects Black students.

Wired: Social distancing so that we do not overwhelm our healthcare system.

Tired: You have 12.75 hours to transition your classes to an online format, effectively kneecapping IT's ability to do anything as they are overwhelmed by faculty unprepared for this transition. 1/n
The first tweet is pretty specific to my university, but the following tweets are more general comments about how #highered should be handling this crisis.

If this is the threat that our leaders say it is, then we need to be decisive & find a way to close out the semester. 2/n
Forcing a sudden shift to online classes is not courageous & inspiring, it is exploitative. Extra, uncompensated labor on an indefinite basis for #faculty and #staff is unacceptable. 3/n

There are a lot of things that tenured (and some tenure track) #faculty can do to resist the decline of #tenure. This thread focuses on ways to formalize the hiring and retention of #adjunct faculty and other #lecturers in your department and at your school. #highereducation
1) Tenured faculty should ask to receive regular (at least annual) reports on what % of courses, and what % of students in their department’s courses are taught by non-tenure track faculty.
2) When your department hires new non-tenure track instructors, ensure that it uses a formal application process. This requires: a regional job posting, application, formal hiring criteria, and a teaching contract before school starts.

Hi everyone thank you for all your support and empathy in the past few days.
To minimize further injuries, the original voicemail with the intended subject's name has been removed, but I am reposting here with name obscured: soundcloud.com/user-251012259… (thanks for tech help!)
I am also reposting my entire Twitter message regarding this incident, with other important ideas I forgot to include:
four days ago my work phone got a rambling but confrontational 3.5 min voicemail from someone questioning my legitimacy to teach based on my presumed #citizenship and #ethnic identity. You can hear the actual message here: soundcloud.com/user-251012259…
