One of the major roadblocks to a #FairDealAtMUN is the ability for contract academic staff to become permanent. Right now, it appears that there are >50 @MUNFaculty members with 4 or more years of work @MemorialU, & ~20 of them have 10 or more years.
This doesn't include faculty who move between @MUNFaculty & LUMUN (who are even more precariously employed). That's a best guess based on data available. Unfortunately, @MemorialU has been unwilling/unable to provide more accurate data.
But really, the data doesn't matter. @MemorialU wants the option to permanently keep faculty in precarious employment without the hope of career progression or the ability to gain a tenure-track appointment.

But the impasse wasn't about compensation, Hossain said.
"We are fighting for democracy, equity and fairness in this deal, money is just a distraction. They want to make it a money matter, it's not all about money."

@MUNFaculty President Ash Hossain says it clearly here - the employer will spin this as a money issue, but this is about so much more. Do we want a public university where a professor can be on contract for 5 yrs, 10 yrs, 15 yrs, with no hope of a permanent job?
Do we want a university where decisions are made by overpaid administrators behind closed doors. Collegial Governance doesn’t just mean more faculty involvement, it means students, workers, community, & alumni have a say. This is OUR university.

Looong thread, so buckle up. #FairDealAtMUN

I've had a few people tell me they've heard a radio interview last week where a student says their Chem Prof will make more on strike than in the classroom. Wish I caught that interview, because, well...
Strictly in terms of take-home pay, it's true. $150 of strike pay per day, paid 7 days a week for 5 days worth of strike duties, is $1050 per week. Not "income," so no deductions. My typical take-home pay is roughly $925 a week, give or take.
So to that student: please know that even though I shared that in class, it's not just your Chem Prof. It's everyone on a teaching term contract like me, and even some newer tenure track folks.
