"Creating a false equivalence between detailed testimony under oath and an anonymous source vouching for Trump is misleading at best and at worse serves the Trump camp’s disinformation machine."

"as the mainstream media fall back into bad habits — repeating Trump’s lies...

and treating statements from known Republican dissemblers as equally credible as those with no motive to lie & no history of disinformation."

Media should follow 2 rules:

"First, unless they have new factual information that meet the standards for anonymous sourcing, respectable publications should not afford anonymity to those offering takes from Trump’s camp."

Impact of Russian disinformation:
How does it affect our societies and political leadership? #Ukraine 🧵

Politicians care about public opinion ----> they want to get elected or re-elected...if you are able to influence public opinion, you influence political decisions.
Russian disinfo (like the denial of war crimes) leads to a lack of empathy with Ukrainians ---> means less pressure on politicians to help Ukraine.

Disinfo-infected people pressure on politicians to support Ukraine less or even normalize relations with Russia.
Our democratic societies are based on freedom of speech, which makes them vulnerable to disinformation campaigns.

We are almost not prepared: There is not enough awareness about Russian disinformation, even if we know about it since decades...

Russian disinfo-machine works like a foxy criminal attorney, defending a gangster who did terrible crimes:

It is all about perverting the truth until people are so confused that they don't know what to believe anymore.(thread)🧵
Many of us Westerners want to believe Russian lies, cause the harsh reality of war crimes, torture and rape is too much for our calm European mind. Russian disinfo gives us an excuse not to think about it anymore, to care less, to lose empathy and to continue our normal life.
We go full #falseequivalence and #falsebalance and speak about "both parties" instead of aggressor against defender, attacker & victim...Russian disinfo gives us also a reason not to help Ukrainians, not to deliver more weapons, to justify our decision to appease the aggressor.

Hey @JoeZickafoose, I started Neiman’s “Learning From the Germans”, and it is already a fascinating read on several levels by page 9
The above link is an interview with Neiman (fascinatingly contentious at places, not to the interviewers credit)

Here is her essay version of her book:
