These hearings are a good first step. We applaud the efforts of @RepZoeLofgren, @davidcicilline, @RepJayapal and others to hold the Trump administration accountable for enacting this cruel and reckless policy. But today’s hearing are not enough.

One of our attorneys, Kat Russell, is sitting in a car park outside the Pearsall Detention center waiting for Sara.
Sara is a 21 y/old indigenous Keqchi woman from Guatemala & is about to be released after 9 months.
Tomorrow she will be reunited w/her 5 y/old daughter, Alida.

Alida was released to her dad in Houston in early June but because Alida went to live with her dad, Sara lost all of the protections of the "Ms. L" lawsuit.
It meant that she was not eligible to be reunified with her daughter or even to get a new credible fear interview.

Before making the long journey to the U.S. border, Sara was brutally attacked in Guatemala on account of being an indigenous woman, and Alida witnessed much of the violence against her mom.

2. This is a big deal and signals what the Trump Admin cares -- and doesn't care -- about. It cares more about separating, detaining, and deporting immigrant families than it does the health and safety of our communities, than it does responding to natural disasters.
3. But it's not a surprise, nor is it unsusual. In fact, earlier this year DHS transferred an additional $200M to support Trump's mass deportation machine. @SenJeffMerkley deserves a shout out for helping to shed light on all of this.

Even as hundreds of separated children remain terrified & alone in detention, the Trump Administration is moving to try & replace family separation with indefinite family incarceration in an unacceptable bid to jail children indefinitely and subject them to more trauma and abuse.
To move this plan forward, the Trump Administration is trying to strip away existing safeguards and protections for children through a new regulation to allow for the long-term imprisonment of children in facilities with well-documented abusive conditions.
The number one priority of the Flores Settlement Agreement is that children not be incarcerated. This foundational principle, which the government agreed to in the settlement, recognizes that the best way to ensure a child’s wellbeing is to keep them out of jail.
